If you’ve ever thought, “That’s just how I am,” this message presses on the uncomfortable possibility that God is not finished rewriting your identity. We start by turning away from feel-good positive affirmations and toward a deeper question: are we centering our desires, or are we getting in touch with what God wants? From Psalm 51, we pray for what only God can create: a clean heart, restored joy, and a steadfast, right spirit.
We walk through why spiritual growth can stall when we cling to labels like stubborn, shy, aggressive, or even our favorite church preferences and traditions. The call is not self-improvement theater. It’s surrender. We talk about the enemy’s attempt to steal identity by whispering that we are not enough, and we answer it plainly: we are not, but God is. That posture makes room for real renewal, fresh revelation, and a life that does not stagnate outside the river of the Holy Spirit.
Then we get practical and Pentecostal-clear about power: living for God is impossible in our own strength, but the Holy Spirit equips us with the same life-giving power that raised Jesus from the dead. We also face failure honestly, not to excuse it, but to change how we respond. Getting back up, seeking God’s guidance, and moving forward matters more than pretending we never missed the mark. You’ll hear simple, concrete steps for Christian discipleship and evangelism: tell one unbeliever a week what Jesus did for you, bring someone to church, pray for someone new, write it down, and stay accountable.

SPEAKER_03I'm glad we're starting a little bit early. Message is a little longer than usual. Not really.
Positive Affirmations Versus God’s Will
SPEAKER_03You hear that positive affirmations, right? About feeling good about ourselves, about getting in touch with our feelings. There's a character some of you might remember back when I would watch Saturday Night Live. It was played by Al Franken, if you know who that is, Stuart Smalley, right? And he did this skit on positive affirmation, and he would say, I'm smart enough, I'm good enough, and doggone it people like me. Christy, let's go to work. This morning I'd like to address just the opposite view. Rather than being in touch with our feelings and or what we desire, or if people like you or don't, I'd like to address getting in touch with what God wants. What he desires in our lives, uh, what he wants to accomplish, knowing that God loves you. That's a hard concept. How could he love me? I'm a mutt. It's a hard concept. Our Lord has a very unique and ever-expanding purpose for all of our lives. More and more, according to our faith and according to our commitment. In other words, the storehouse is huge. And it's only relinquished and released according to our faith and our commitment. If you ask his direction, he'll give it to you. If you seek him, you'll find him. If you knock, it will be open. The promise is the Holy Spirit will fill you with an overwhelming sense of newness, of freshness, not just until that zeal work wears off when we were first saved, that um new car spirituality. Right? Oh, you don't do anything, don't know. You're not allowed to drink in my car. A couple of years down the road, you're dumping coffee all over, and huh? Maybe we do that with our spirituality as well. Being truly born again means serving God doesn't get old.

SPEAKER_03It doesn't get boring, it's not something we tire of doing, but new every morning. New every morning from your first day forward. Wow. I sense an anointing in the house this morning. Uh I believe the Holy Spirit is going to reveal some things, open some eyes, touch some hearts, fill with power. So hang on, buckle up. Uh if you sense it, I won't be offended. If you need to run to the altar, I'll keep preaching. Amen. Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit,
Psalm 51 And The Right Spirit
SPEAKER_03saith the Lord.
SPEAKER_05Hallelujah.
SPEAKER_03If you have your Bibles, turn with Chrissy, please, to Psalms 51. Psalms 51. 51 beginning with the tenth verse. I was relaying to someone this week that how do you how do you know when to stop? And I said, from the time that I walk to the pulpit, I sense an anointing most times. And that anointing remains throughout the message, and then at some point I feel it gone. And then I know it's time to shut up. Let's quit. Psalms 51 and 10.
SPEAKER_01Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me by your generous spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners shall be converted to you. Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall sing aloud of your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth your praise. For you do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it. You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart. These, O God, you will not despise.
SPEAKER_03The heart of this morning's message is to help you get in touch with God's plan for your life. To fill us with a hunger and a passion for his word in order to fulfill his purpose in our life. To know absolutely that only God creates that newness, that renewal of a right spirit when we yield to him. With an open and contrite heart, as the psalmist said. And I'll use for a subject this morning a right spirit. A right spirit. Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you, Lord, for this truth, this revealing word from this wonderful book of Psalms, Lord. I ask you to let it sink into our hearts, our minds, Lord. Let it be afresh. On top. Amen and amen.

Identity And Letting God Change You
SPEAKER_03The first point in this message this morning is our identity, who we are, what we represent, and the point that I want to make is that we not get too attached to our identity. What does that mean, Pastor? As we move from faith to faith, from glory to glory, the Lord wants to continually change us. He wants to change our identity little by little, more and more, on and on, over and over. Changed and conformed into his image. And understand this the enemy's primary goal is to steal your identity. I believe one of the reasons, and look, uh he wants to deceive you into believing that, and we this is where the positive affirmation comes in, that we're not good enough. And let's settle that right now right now. We're not. We're not good enough. Amen. We'll never be good enough. Amen. He's good. Hallelujah. I believe one of the reasons that Christians don't grow, that we don't mature in the Lord, is we resist that change that the Lord's trying to do in our lives. Trying the new identity He wants to give us. We resist that because that's not who I am. We're unwilling to let go of our identity, identities that have that have come over years of what you've done and how you've been. Amen. And not just intertwined in our Christian lives, but in our pre-Christ lives as well. We hang on to that identity. I'm stubborn, that's how I am. Or I'm aggressive, that's how I roll. Or I'm shy, I'm outgoing. And look, I'm not saying that those traits are flaws or weaknesses, but we bring them into our spirit-filled life and declare them unchangeable. That's just how I am. That will never change. We need to rethink that. We need to rethink that. I'll be a and we I'll be a stubborn Christian then, I guess. Or I'll be an aggressive Christian. And that might be okay, but why aren't we willing to let God change us? Change our hearts, change our minds, change our being. Even our Christian identities, our church identities. I'm Baptist. I'm Methodist. I'm Pentecostal. I like this in church. Or I like that. I like only the old hymns. Or only the 7-Eleven music. You know what 7-Eleven music is? Seven words eleven times. Or I don't go, I remember I had someone telling me, I don't go for raised hands in the church. Amen. And the Lord said he wanted to continually create in us a new heart. A new heart. And renew our spirit in his spirit. There's the key. Our spirit in his spirit. And you know when we don't care, maybe not the best term. When there's when we're able to drop our identities of who we think we are, and we're malleable in his hand in the spirit, not hold on to who we think we are, it puts us in a proper position for his spirit to speak to us and create new things in our lives. They're new every morning. Hallelujah. Some of us are so set in our identities, whether it's weak, strong, soft, quiet, loud, that's who I am, Pastor. If I had a nickel for every time someone's told me that, that's who I am, Pastor. And no, you're a new creation. Old things are passed away. All things are become new. But we take our position, and that's it. We won't budge. And it takes renewal, reworking, revival to move forward in the Lord. Glory. If you desire the Holy Spirit to reveal things to you, we must be willing to be changed. To be changed, maybe subtly, maybe just a tweak, maybe a whole makeover. But we have to allow that rebooting in order to receive from the Lord. We have to let him do it. A refreshing, that new revelation, understanding his desire in our walk, what he wants you to do, where he wants you to be. When you and I or the church stop expecting fresh revelation, new exciting ways to minister, to give, to receive, to bless, to be blessed, we begin to stagnate. You remember the analogy that Brother Ezekiel gave about the river, and there were parts off of the river that were marshes, and they stagnated. The water wasn't fresh, it was no good. Outside of where the river flows. Amen. That river being the Holy Spirit. We begin to stagnate. And in stagnation, no life. There is no life in stagnant water. Second point.
Power To Live Comes From Spirit
SPEAKER_03Rely on the Holy Spirit to equip us. Turn to Romans, please, Romans 8. Romans 8 and 1. I was going to say this is my favorite chapter in the Bible, but I say that about every chapter we read. But if the spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his spirit that dwelleth in you. God has given us the same power, the same power that walked into the tomb early Sunday morning and raised Jesus from the dead. Glory. The power is what gives us life. That power is what makes us alive. Glory, glory. Wait, wait, wait, wait, in uh Colossians 1, I believe, I know it's in the 20s. I believe it's 28 or 29. It says, I labor, striving according to his working, which works in me mightily, mightily. I'm trying to think of the uh the paraphrase, the NIV, or uh to this end, I strenuously contend with all the energy of Christ in me. My my. The word for mighty there comes from the root meaning mighty in Greek. It's dunymus. Dunamis. It's where we get our word dynamite. And it means worker of miracles, strength, power, mighty deeds. It's not our knowledge, it's not our abilities, our words, or even our prayers. Brothers and sisters, if you take nothing else home this morning, take this home. It's not us, it's the Holy Spirit in us. Glory. Living for God, I probably don't have to tell you this, living for God comes with challenges. Comes with some degree of difficulties, but how many of you know anything? Anything worth having is a challenge. And to try to live for God in our own power is impossible. It's not possible. We will fail, we will falter, we will. The word of God instructs us to lean not to our own understanding. And the Holy Spirit is God and abides in you. He's in you right now, the Holy Spirit, to lead you to a life worth living, to work on you and in you as well, and through you, taking you from hope to promise. I hope that works out. Now he promised me it would. When we're able to accept that, and all the promises of God are what? Yes and amen. That which moves us from hoping to believing. Glory. From wishing to knowing. From trying to doing, from acting to fulfilling. It's the power of the Holy Ghost. I know most of you know his name in Greek is Parakletos, the paraclete. One called, just listen to the definition of that. One called alongside to help. One called alongside to help. He is our power to become better. Our power to become better.
Failure Is Real So Get Back Up
SPEAKER_03Point number three. Turn to Philemon. Ah, we don't go there often, do we? Chrissy, do you have it in the NIV? Would you would you read that for me? Uh Philemon three, twelve through sixteen. Um no, chapter three, twelve through sixteen. I'm sorry, twelve through sixteen. Yeah. Hold hold hold on, James. Do this do it on here so it ends up on the recording.
SPEAKER_00Okay, Philemon 1, 12 through 16, and the NIV says, I am sending him, who is my very heart, back to you. I would have likened to keep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chains for the gospel. But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you do would not seem forced, but would be voluntary. Perhaps the reason he has separated you for a little while was that you might have him back forever. No longer a slave, but better than a slave as a dear brother. He is very dear to me, but even dearer to you, both as a fellow man and as a fellow brother in the Lord.
SPEAKER_03Wow. Wow. Just a snippet of an interaction, a church interaction. Great things, great things, thank you, Jamie. Great things often attempted are only occasionally realized. Great things often attempted are only occasionally realized. Powerful statement. Build on your past blessings. Build on what you learned in the past. Build on what we learn from our failings, from where we went wrong. Let us live up to what we've already attained. What does all that mean? In the natural world, we all know that a new business in the new businesses in the uh in America in the first year, 22% fail. In the first year. Five years, it goes up. Up exponentially. 50% fail. Don't make it. And I think it's if you take it out to eight or nine years, I think it's uh three quarters fail. Three quarters of businesses fail. How many of you know that that people lose their jobs for whatever reason an average of seven times in a lifetime? Seven times they changed jobs for whatever reason. You got fired, you moved on, you moved up seven times. How many of you know that half of marriages end in divorce? Half. Amen. Goes for Christians as well. We've all failed in our lives. We've all fallen short. If someone tells you, yeah, I don't think I sinned today, Pastor, yeah, you're sinning right now. We've all failed, but the Holy Spirit tells us it's not our failure that matters. It's not the failure, it's how we respond. How are we going to respond to that failure? It's our reaction that makes the difference, that makes the change. It's our response that determines whether or not we can be spiritually successful. We may miss the mark, missing the marks in, not 100% on target. But if we get back up and seek the Lord's guidance, the Holy Ghost will dust you off, put you back on the path, and you are promised victory. Victory. Victory by the decree of our King is our right. Not all right, our right. Someone explained to me that they didn't get more involved in the church because they knew that sooner or later they'd fail and let someone down. If I have learned anything in my walk with God over the past over the past almost 50 years, uh it's that God would rather that I get out of the boat and try to do something, try to walk the water like Peter did, than sit back in the boat and do nothing. He would rather, even if I would succeed by sitting in the boat, well, I got the boat to shore, he'd rather you get out of the water and try to walk it than sit in the boat and hope it hits shore. Amen. Alright, number four.
Simple Weekly Outreach That Adds Up
SPEAKER_03Accomplishing a work for the Lord. Proverbs. Proverbs twenty-nine. Twenty-nine and eighteen. But he that keepeth the law happy is he. If we are to accomplish something for the Lord. In our Bible study, Paul said to the Ephesian church that if we're not working for the Lord, we'll cast off restraint. And what's that mean? It means that we'll drift back to old ways. We'll drift back to who we pardon my English, who we used to be. And that's what Paul told the new Ephesian converts. Don't go back to the old old ways. And in order to do that, keep working for the Lord. Keep pressing forward. So what should I do? What work can I do? And you'll all be able to relate to this. You have a job, you work eight to ten hours a day, you have a family, you have a house, you have a car. There aren't a lot of hours left in a day. Amen. And here's what the Lord showed me. You want to know what to do? Maybe this is a challenge. Tell one person a week what Jesus did for you. Tell one person a week. Now this can't be another Christian. This can't be someone who knows the Lord. The person has to be an unbeliever, or and at least someone with no spiritual affiliation. And sometimes it's hard. Sometimes you end up on Saturday, and all the the only people you talk to all week were Christians. Right? So you didn't run into a whole lot. Sometimes you have to target that. You have to make a plan. You have to make a plan to go see someone that you know doesn't believe and tell them about Jesus. Some weeks you can get two, which would be a good week. But here's what I want you to think about. Think about that. If you talk to one person a week about Jesus and what he's done for you, my my 52 weeks a year. Hallelujah. That's 52 souls that you touched for the kingdom of God. And in 20 years, that's a thousand forty souls that you touch for the kingdom. Just telling them about Jesus. Doesn't have to be long, doesn't have to be drawn out, can be short and sweet. Let me tell you who I was, let me show you who I am. What Jesus did for me. What a mighty work. What an outreach. We say, oh, what can I do? I'm 70 years old. What can I do? Plenty of you. Tell one person a week about Jesus. Hallelujah. Bring someone to church once a month. Once a month. Bring an unbeliever or believer. Bring them to church. Get them under the word. Glory. Pray for someone new every day. Say, I can't get out, I don't talk to anybody. Pray for someone brand new every day. A sister in our church invited someone to church on Facebook and said, Bring your Bible, you won't be disappointed. Hallelujah. That's a work. That's a work. That's a work gone viral. That's a work gone wild. Tell someone. If we're not working for the Lord, we begin to drift. We begin to drift away. Not seeing him move. Say, I'm not seeing God move in my life. I'm not seeing God move in. That's because we're drifting away. Glory. We can't fulfill the change he wants to bring about in our lives because we're drifting. We've cast off restraint. We didn't want to, we didn't do this for the first ten years we were saved, but now it doesn't seem so bad, and I'll do it a little bit. Think about the work you can do this week. And write them down. Write them, well, that's silly, Pastor. I don't, you don't have to write anything down. Write down the victories you need. Write down the prayers God has answered. Write down the gifts you'd like to receive. Maybe you're saying that doesn't sound very spiritual. Sounds really clinical that I'm going to write this down. We're supposed to earnestly covet the gifts, to seek the gifts, to go after them, to desire them. And really, I'm a list guy because so much going on. If I don't write it down, I'll lose it. If I don't write something down, somebody tells me something, right, Donna? If I don't write it down, I'll lose it. It won't be there anymore. Make a list of how you can serve God more efficiently, more effectively. Make a list of what you need in your family. Of what you need in your extended family. How you'd like to see God move in your family. And then be accountable to someone. Don't keep that list private. Don't keep it. No, be accountable to someone. You know, sometimes we resolve to begin a work for the Lord, here's what I'm going to do. And then the first hurdle that comes along, we didn't tell anybody, so we can just drop it. Right? Be accountable to someone. A brother or sister. It's easier to give up if nobody knows. If you tell them we're going to do this, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this for the Lord, and you're accountable
Make A Plan And Stay Accountable
SPEAKER_03to someone, a little harder to set it down. Hallelujah. But if a brother or sister knows what you've undertaken, and again, not talking about an acquaintance or just somebody at work, tell a brother or a sister. Someone who will that because an acquaintance or somebody at work might just criticize you and go, what do you want to do that for? What's that going to get you? You know, even if you even if you think they're a friend, tell a brother or a sister. You know, even those closest to us in our family, what do you want to do that? I remember, I remember that. What do you want to what do you want to start a church for? What are you going to do that for? We can't go fishing anymore. What are you going to do that for? Go to all that effort? You can't do that. A brother or sister will lift you up, will pray for you, will encourage you in whatever endeavor you have taken on for the Lord. And you you say, maybe you're saying, I don't have those kind of people in my life. Maybe it's time for you to get new people in your life. People that will shout with you in victory, glory, and cry with you in grief, give you a little hug when you need it, and a little boot when you need that. Hallelujah. Wow. Five-point message. Number five. Expect
Worship Or Worry Expect Real Change
SPEAKER_03the Holy Spirit to change your life. Expect Him to change your life. Luke eleven. Eleven and thirteen. If ye, then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? Everything we receive from God, everything everyone receives from God, every bit of favor and guidance and strength and wisdom and working in our lives, patience and perseverance, comes from the Godhead, the Father, the Son, through the person and agency of the Holy Ghost. You know, and I'm not saying that it's wrong, but we hear people say, Jesus came into my heart, or Jesus rides with me, and I'm not saying that's the wrong way to say it. But Jesus is at in heaven. Jesus is at the right hand of the Father. It's the Holy Spirit that is the presence in us. Hallelujah. The governor of the earth is a good way to look at him. Miles Monroe wrote a book that says the Holy Spirit is the governor of the whole earth, the true agent of change. The agent of change. He hasn't taken up residence with inside your temple. You are the temple of God. Spirit of God dwells in you. He hasn't taken up residence in your heart and your life to entertain you or to show your Pentecostalism. When we yield control of our lives, he will not be content to allow us to go in the same old way. When we recognize his place in our life, he won't be content with you, and you will feel it. You will sense it. He'll move you in a direction of the will of God. He'll minister to you. He'll intercede for you. He'll fight your battles. Glory. He'll lead you into high worship. Not in church when we have music, but lead you into high worship when you're out in the backyard. Glory. And he'll ask a question. He asked me this. Oh, it had to be thousands of times. So, Pastor, are you going to worship or are you going to worry? Are you going to worship or are you going to worry? A spirit-led person, we know, is considered righteous by God the Father and does right because he or she can't do anything else. Oh, and yeah, I know, we'll we'll fail, we'll falter, we'll stumble at times. But if you're spirit-led, you don't need to decide if you should uh take that extra product that the clerk didn't check through the scanner. Or should we call it out. You don't need to make that decision. Amen? Or hold back that when you got the two brand new hundred dollar bills and they stuck together. There really isn't a decision to make about whether you give it back or not. Or there's no decision when you come up facing a difficult spiritual problem to help someone. That's not a decision you have to make. Of course you will. But we do what is right and leave the results to the Lord. Uh knowing it will always turn out all right in the end. Everything's gonna be okay, not just a cliche. Everything was is gonna be okay. Without a doubt. Uh there will be times of testing, there will be, but if we worship instead of worry, or instead of trying to fix it, if we worship, if we're expecting the Holy Spirit to make the change, if we're expecting him to intervene in our problem, in our issue, in our family, in our life, if we're expecting him, of course he'll get this. Uh then regardless of what happens or how long or short it may be, we'll see a positive change. A positive change. Uh we can feel bad for ourselves, we can rebuke and claim and bind and loose, we can ask everyone to pray. But if we're not worshiping, if we're not in the spirit of worship, we're outside the glory of God. God calls us to worship him. He that comes to God must worship him. Uh the Bible instructs us to continue to behold his glory. Um if you study that that out, it's kind of like uh in a mirror or a reflection. Uh behold his glory. If we do that, we will be continually changed and transformed. You know, about every three years somebody said, Well, your preaching's really changed. Probably. But only because I submit to the leading of the Holy Ghost. We'll continue to be changed. We will continue to be transformed. When you look in the spiritual mirror, we'll see a change and a difference, a new image, a right spirit. A right spirit. Closer and closer to his image in every increasing splendor from one degree of glory to the next, all by and through the Holy Spirit of promise. Not by something we do or that we change or fix or that we abstain from. Not by might, not by power, but by his spirit, saith the Lord. This change, this change, this transformation, this faith-to-faith growth is the Lord's doing. Recognize that. Recognize what the Lord is doing in you. Say, well, I don't that's odd. I usually and now I don't. It's the Lord's doing. Recognize what he's doing in our lives. Uh the continual renewing of a right spirit that the psalmist told us about. And you know what? Wow. It's marvelous in our sight. Amen.
