Hurry can feel normal until you realize it is hollowing you out. We get honest about a struggle many Christians live with quietly: we love Jesus, but the day fills up, “later” never comes, and our souls start running on fumes. The message is simple and confrontational in the best way: resting with the Lord is a battle, and it affects every part of life, from anxiety and overwhelm to how we treat the people right in front of us.
Join Daniel Johnson as he walks us through Exodus 5 and Pharaoh’s move to increase Israel’s workload the moment worship is mentioned. That ancient strategy still has teeth: keep God’s people so busy they cannot pray, cannot breathe, cannot gather strength. From there we connect the dots to spiritual warfare in Ephesians 6, where truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the sword of the Spirit are not abstract ideas but a lived way of standing firm. We also sit with Jesus’ words in Matthew 6 about worry, trust, and seeking first the kingdom of God, because faith is more than a feeling, it is belief plus action.
Then we turn toward the promise many of us crave: “rest for your souls.” Matthew 11 invites the burdened to come close, not to earn love or prove worth, but to receive it. The Psalms and Elijah’s story remind us that when the heart is overwhelmed, God leads us back to the Rock, resets our perspective, and restores what fear and fatigue distort. Our sole mission is to present the living truth of a risen Lord, Jesus Christ, to a remnant church and a lost world. So let's go into the service recorded live at Valley Gospel Church.
SPEAKER_02Happy Sunday. Good to see you. Good to see your smiling face in the house. Wonderful. Wonderful. Let's pray and then uh I'll share what the Lord was sharing with me with you. Amen? Father, thank you so much for everything that you do. Thank you for this awesome house that we can come into and just be filled, overflowing with your spirit and your presence, Lord. Thank you for brothers and sisters that we could come together and just praise your holy name, Lord. We just thank you for your word, your strength, and your guidance. We ask you today to open our hearts and our ears and our minds, Lord, that we could receive your word, that we could we could know it, believe it, and in faith stand on your word and with you, Lord. And I thank you for going out before us, behind us, and all around us, Lord, protecting and guiding the path that you have anointed for us to walk on. And Father, I just pray that you anoint each and every one of us to hear and receive your word. I pray, Father, and I ask you to anoint me just to rightly divide your word and to give everyone here, Father, what you have given me. I pray and surrender to you to speak through me to your children whenever you need. Yes and amen. You got it, Father. And we love you and we thank you for everything. Holy Spirit, whatever you want. This is your house, and we love you and we thank you in Jesus' mighty name. Amen.
Why Rest With God Is A Battle
SPEAKER_02Amen. All right. All right. So when we're reading the Bible and following in Jesus' journey, we see in the midst of all the things that are going on around him and all the things that he was doing, that he went off by himself a lot to pray and be with his father. And as this world and the things heat up, no matter the hour, we need to go away and hang out with the Lord on purpose, just like he did. We have to learn to rest and to battle separately and at the same time. We rest in Christ while we're out doing whatever we do, but we still have to make it a point to be with the Lord. This world and everything in it, including the good things God gives us, work, family, friends, all take time. And on top of all this, there still has to be a separation of time for us with Jesus. To stay at rest and at peace with Him. He alone is the author of both. And now there's always going to be things that pop up and we have to take care of, but we can't let that be the norm and steal our time with God. We also need to discern between a true emergency and not. And I remember when I first started to come to church that it seemed every Sunday somebody had an emergency and needed me to go anywhere but here. But it wasn't a true emergency. It's just when it was convenient or happened to be convenient for them because they didn't have anything else to do on Sunday. This was their day off, and we need to discern and to be able to tell the difference. This world and our enemy Satan wants to keep us and our kids so busy we don't have time to just rest and be with the Lord. The world doesn't want you to have time with the Lord because that's where our strength comes from. That's where our roots grow down deep. Bible study, church on Sunday, alone time at home with Him and in prayer. The world gives no downtime to seek God or get closer to Him because we're so bombarded with all the things and stuff of this world. And this world doesn't matter, and it doesn't matter what that stuff is. And did June's ever run so long nonstop that when you finally got a minute to sit and just relax, or to sit and just just be, that you realize you forgot how to just be. You forgot how to sit and just be with the Lord. You didn't mean for that to happen, but now you remember but you don't remember how to be. You feel like you always have to be doing something, have to be busy, or something's not right. Maybe you tell yourself you're lazy. Well, the Lord's been trying to teach me on this for a while now, and hopefully we can dive into God's word with the Holy Ghost, and He can help us with this battle. Because resting with the Lord is a battle. And this is such an important battle that affects way more than I ever thought or realized. It reaches into every area of our lives and touches everyone we meet and talk to. But this sneaky attack to still our time with God has been going on for so long. And we're gonna look at an example of this and then dive into resting, battling, and battling to rest. Amen.
Pharaoh Adds Work To Block Worship
SPEAKER_02Amen. And Donna, the title is uh Rest for My Soul for this. And we're gonna be looking at an example of the world and these and those who don't know God keeping us busy on purpose. And it's way back in the first Exodus with Moses. And we'll be in Exodus 5. And just to catch you up where we're where we're at, this is right after God calls Moses and says, It's time to go get my children out of Israel. It's time to come out. And Moses does the same thing a lot of us do. And what George alludes to this morning, he says, Oh Lord, I can't really talk so good. You uh, you know what I mean? I I believe in all that, but you're gonna have to uh you're gonna have to, you gotta get somebody else. I can't do it, right? I can't talk good. And God says, uh, God says, Who do you think made the lame, the deaf, the dumb, and the blind? Who do you think did that? And uh Moses said, Lord, I can't, I can't. So uh God gets a little angry with Moses, and then here comes Aaron, his brother, along. So God says, All right, Aaron can talk good. Get Aaron and you and Aaron can both go. So that's where we pick up here. And then uh Moses and Aaron both go to the children of Israel first and tell them that uh God hears you and he sees you in your affliction and he will deliver you. So they are happy and begin to worship God for a minute, and then this happens, and it's in Exodus 5. And uh if you can stand, if you'll stand for the reading of God's word, we'll start in one. It's a little bit longer of a reading, so if you're having trouble standing, you can stay seated. But it's in Exodus 5, verse 1, and it says, Afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh, Thus says the Lord God of Israel, let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness. And Pharaoh said, Who is this Lord that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, nor will I let Israel go. So they said, The God of the Hebrews has met with us, please let us go three days' journey into the desert and sacrifice to the Lord our God, lest he fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword. Then the king of Egypt said to them, Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people from their work? Get back to your labor. And Pharaoh said, Look, the people of the land are many now, and you make them rest from their labor. So the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people and their officers, saying, You shall no longer give the people straw to make brick as before. Let them go and gather straw for themselves, and you shall lay on them the same the quota of brick which they made before. You shall not reduce it, for they are idle, therefore they cry out, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God. Let more work be laid on the men, that they may labor in it, and let them not regard false words. And the taskmaster of the people and their officers went out and spoke to the people, saying, Thus says Pharaoh, I will not give you straw. Go get yourselves straw where you can't, wherever you can find it, yet none of your work will be reduced. So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw, and the taskmasters forced them to hurry, saying, Fulfill your work, your daily quota, as when there was straw. Also the officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and were asked, Why have you not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and today as before? Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, Why are you dealing thus with your servants? There is no straw given to your servants, and they say to us, Make brick, and indeed your servants are beaten, but the fault is in your own people. But he said, You are idle, idle, therefore you say, Let us go and go and sacrifice to the Lord. Therefore go now and work, for no straw shall be given you, yet you shall deliver the quota of bricks. And the officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in trouble after it was said, You shall not reduce any bricks from your daily quota. Amen. We'll stop right there, and you can be seated.
Strength Comes From Time With Jesus
SPEAKER_02But wow, just like that, we see way back then, Pharaoh don't want to give you more time with the Lord. He knows us. God's children. Us spending more time with our Father is bad for him. And Pharaoh didn't want it then and he doesn't want it now with us. When we hang out with God, he builds us up in every possible way. He shows us who we are in his eyes, how much we're loved by him, and he strengthens us and teaches us how to battle and how to use our sword. He shows us where our confidence comes from. It's him. He shows us that every battle, every fight, every stronghold the enemy tries to put in your head is powerless if we know how to use our sword and we stand in the authority we have as his children. Just like God is about to show Pharaoh who he is and deliver his children, he will do the same for us. The word of God is our sword that will cut in pieces every lie that Satan whispers and is the firm foundation that we stand on. And that's the gospel of Jesus Christ. God's breath on paper, that with the power of the Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus, that will defeat every enemy and win every battle. The name of Jesus will change in real-time situations, both spiritual and physical. There's not a thing that he can't do, and winning this physical and spiritual battle requires us to believe and have confidence in him and his word. But it can't be a fake confidence because we're going to have to prove it in battle. God gave his children armor and a sword, which is what a soldier needs for battle. If we didn't have to battle, he wouldn't have given it to us. And these things, but we battle resting in the power of his might, not our own. And we will win, but we need the boldness to stand in the midst of the enemy. Psalm 23, 5 says that you prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup runs over. God will prepare a table for us in the midst of our enemies, but we have to have the boldness and the confidence enough to walk in amongst our enemies while facing them and sit down at that table. Our boldness and this confidence we need comes from those deep roots that are growing when we're hanging out with the Lord. The enemy tries to break us down physically, with busyness, and spiritually. And this spiritual battle goes on in our minds with thoughts and ideas.
Armor Of God And The Sword
SPEAKER_02And the Bible is specific on exactly how to fight and how to win this battle. And we'll start in Ephesians 6. Ephesians 6. Ephesians 6, 10 to 18. And it says, Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand, stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace, above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one, and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. So how do we fight against all this? It says, Stand therefore, having girded yourself in the truth. What's the truth? Jesus said he is the truth, and the word of God is the truth. Put on the breastplate of righteousness. How are we made righteous? Or what is our righteousness? It's through faith in Jesus Christ. Shod your feet with the gospel of peace. What is the gospel of peace? It's the good news of Jesus Christ, his death and resurrection for us. And then he says, above all, take the shield of faith. How do we stand? How do we stand and receive everything and anything from God? It's by faith. And then our weapon is the sword of the Spirit. And what is the sword of the Spirit? It's the Word of God. And who is the Word of God? Jesus Christ. Are you seeing a theme here? It's all Jesus. And the helmet of salvation, it's the knowledge and the assurance that in Christ, in Jesus, we are the Lord's, and that we have an eternal home with Him that is secure and final. That no matter what happens here, nobody and nothing can take our salvation. And then he ends with always be praying in the Spirit. And it's all by prayer, faith, and Jesus. He said, above all, faith, faith in him and his word. We have to choose faith. Faith over every natural feeling that comes. And you'll have to prove what you believe. Whether worry, stress, fear, anxiety, no matter what comes, the lies of the enemy, the only way to overcome is your faith. Believing and standing on God and His Word. And what does God or His Word say about this? Because remember, God and His Word are the truth, not what we think and not what we feel. One of the most helpful things I've learned is that my mind lies and that I don't have to listen to the lies. And we just taught the kids downstairs that faith is your belief plus action. You believe God and His Word, therefore you stand. Your standing shows whether you believe God or not. The fiery darts are coming, and we have to stand in the full armor. We can stand with the shield of faith or not. And I'll show you a good example of this right now. And this is red letters,
Jesus On Worry And Seeking First
SPEAKER_02Jesus speaking, God Himself speaking, and you have to decide if you're going to believe and stand or not. And this is Matthew 6. Matthew 6. Verse 25 to 34. Matthew 6, 25 to 34. And this is Jesus saying, Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap, nor gather in the barns, yet your heavenly father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow, they need neither toil nor spin, and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, What shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or what shall we wear, for all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things, but seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Amen. He said, But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Do we believe this? Do we believe God? Don't worry about tomorrow today. God will take care of us. Isn't that what the truth just said? God has our day already written down, and He wants to help us and guide us through it, but we have to be present with Him in it. We can't be worried about tomorrow while we're still in today. The world wants us so preoccupied every day that in everything we do, we're so busy with the next thing in our minds that we're not even present for God to use, for God to use us in the moment because we're never in that moment with Him. We've already in our minds moved on to the next job. Or thing that we have to do while we are still doing what's right in front of us. We need to trust God and to rest. We need to slow down. And resting isn't an excuse to be lazy. We all have stuff to do that has to get done. But I know for me, anyways, because Jesus isn't calling every five minutes or pounding on your door, needing you to do something, that we say in our mind, I'll hang out with Jesus later. And then all of a sudden, the day's over. A couple of days are over, and I ran out of later. And the only thing I should have done, the only thing I wanted to do, I didn't do, and that's hang out with Jesus. We need to remember that he's the one that makes me to lie down in green pastures. He restores my soul. He leads me in the paths of righteousness. He does nothing else. And just like Pharaoh didn't want to give God's children any alone time with him, the world and Satan doesn't want us to have any alone time with our Father either. He's trying to distract us because now is the time for us to battle. Now is the time we're called on to be soldiers, to pray, and to go to battle. Satan knows if we're preoccupied with work or running around all day, every day, just so busy and being pulled in every direction that these seemingly harmless distractions that are doing that they are doing something. They're stealing our time with the Lord. And yes, a soldier has to go out to battle, but being with the Lord always comes first. So this battle we fight is God's soldiers with our armor and sword is how we win. And it's with truth, righteousness, the gospel, and ultimately the greatest battle in victory, salvation. And it's all by and through faith. And to make it clear, each one of these steps is Jesus. He is the truth, he is our righteousness, he is the gospel, and our salvation is in him and him alone. It's him.
Come To Me And Find Soul Rest
SPEAKER_02And now in Hebrews 4, it talks about a rest for God's people. And Jesus tells us about this himself in Matthew 11, 28 to 30. Matthew 11, 28 to 30. Jesus says, Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Jesus says, Come to me, all of you who need physical rest, heavy laden and burdened, all of you who use, who need spiritual rest for your souls, all of you who are working so hard to earn my love, to earn salvation, just stop. Stop. Just come to me and rest. The price for this, the price for this love and salvation, this being accepted, being good enough, was his life, and he gave it. It's finished. But we don't come to Jesus just once. It's a relationship. We're supposed to come and hang out all the time. We don't give him our life and get saved and then never talk to him again. We come and sit at his feet now and talk to him all the time because we because we are at peace with God through Jesus and we sit at his feet to learn and to grow. We come and hang out with him anytime life gets crazy and we need rest. Not for salvation, but rest in the midst of life's storms. Just read through the Psalms. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help and trouble. My soul trusts in you, and in the shadow of your wings I will make my refuge until these calamities pass me by. We cry out and run to the Lord. And I love this. Psalm 61. Psalm 61, 1 to 4. It says, Hear my cry, O God, attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to you. When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in your tabernacle, your tabernacle, excuse me, your tabernacle forever. I will trust in the shelter of your wings. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Just beautifully reminds me of the story of Elijah. And it's in 1 Kings 18 and 19. And we're not going to turn there now, but I'll just give you some highlights from the story. When we find ourselves scared
Overwhelmed Hearts And Elijah’s Reset
SPEAKER_02or shaken, or when we feel overwhelmed and out of control, not knowing what to do, remember this. Elijah just wins a huge victory with God on Mount Carmel, and then he let a little lie from the enemy get into his head and his thoughts from Jezebel. And he finds himself running scared, worried, and tired. So tired and worried and wore out, he asks God to just let him die, to take his life. It's no use, he says, I'm no good. And what does God do? God tells him to rest and to eat and then come and hang out with me for a while. God leads Elijah to his holy mountain. And while they're hanging out, God shows and reminds Elijah who's in control and just how big of a God we serve. Reminding Elijah just how small his problem is compared to God. And Elijah hides himself in the rock. He tucks himself back in the rock. And who's the rock? Jesus is the rock. And then Elijah hears that stops, that still small voice. I love that. It says when he hears this still, small voice, he wraps his mantle around himself and he walks out to meet God. And that's exactly what we're to do. Rest in Christ, tuck ourselves back in Jesus and run to God. Go rest and be alone with God. It changes us and our perspectives. It lets us see our tiny problems that seemed huge before we saw and were reminded of how big our God is. And the reason all this matters and spending time with God matters is because when things heat up, the Bible says that because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. And I hear this and see this from supposed Christians every day who are called to be different than the world and those around us. And sadly, I see this in me. When I've gone too long without being with the Lord, when I'm busy running around, I see myself acting just like the world. When you're mean, I'm mean. When you got an attitude, I got an attitude. And that's just what Satan in this world wants. The love to grow cold and everybody to be offended. And you're mean, so I'm gonna be mean. Satan wants us all divided and fighting everyone over everything and anything. And that's why the Bible says don't be easily offended, because it's easy to get offended. Going away to rest with the Lord restores peace and joy inside us as his children. It fills us back up with love so that we can give it out. Remember when Moses' face shined and he had to wear a veil because it shined so bright from being with the Lord. It shined from him being in the presence of the Lord. And that's like us. When we're with the Lord, we leave his presence with peace, with rest, with joy, radiating out of us God's love and who he is. But if it's been too long, that shining starts to fade. Everything good we have comes from him. Jesus said to love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. That's rough.
When Love Grows Cold Without Rest
SPEAKER_02Look at Romans 12. Romans 12, 17. Romans 12, 17 to 21. It says, Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath, for it is written, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord. Therefore, if your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him drink, for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. What? Love your enemies and overcome evil with good? You know how hard this is? You're not gonna do that alone. And you're not gonna do that without spending time with God. We need the power of God in us. We need the Holy Ghost to help us do this. We need this time alone with God for deep roots, or we won't be able to do this. In order to reflect Jesus, we have to rest in Him. And I'll close with this. I hope with all this battling and resting that we don't get confused, or I didn't confuse you. So let's make it plain. All the battling, all the armor points to Jesus. All the resting points to and comes from Jesus. He said, I will give you rest. We need rest and we need to rest and battle in him. We stand with him and on his word. Every battle starts with a thought or an idea and then manifests itself in the flesh, naturally or physically. And that's why we take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. And there it is again. Christ. It's Jesus. The answer to all this is Jesus. It's coming to him, surrendering to him, inviting him into your heart and your life. It's growing those roots down deep with him and showing that by our actions. We need to come under his authority. We need to read the word and hang out with him. We need a good Bible study group to go deeper in the word and reason together. We need to come to church on Sundays and sharpen our sword for the battle with all of the church together. We need to sing and to praise the Lord for how awesome and amazing He is. We need all of it. We need every single thing Jesus said we need to fight this battle. There is only one answer to all of life and all of your life personally, no matter what that is or looks like, and that's Jesus. We need access to the Godhead, the Trinity, the throne room in heaven, and Jesus did that for us. In him, it is all available to us. We need the Father's plan. We need Jesus in everything he did for us with his life, death, and resurrection, all of it, and the Holy Ghost, our helper, comforter, teacher, and tour guide here on earth,
Overcome Evil With Good
SPEAKER_02our connection to heaven and the power of God here on the earth that works and moves and fills us up. The power that rose Jesus from the grave in us and shaping and molding us into his image, the image of Jesus. He's the one that leads us beside the still waters. He's the one that delivers us. He's the one that heals us. He's the one that protects us. Nobody else and nothing else can make up for time with him. So no matter what's going on in life, make some time for him. Slow down to speed up. Jesus said, come aside by yourself to a deserted place and rest a while with me. Amen. Amen. Thank you for listening.

SPEAKER_03You know, even though we're Christians, sometimes, and Jamie alluded to this already, sometimes we get buried in tombs of our own making. We get buried under lies, fears, uh, worries, wrong thinking. But just like the voice of Jesus called Lazarus to come out of his grave and rise up again to life, the voice of Jesus is calling us to rise up out of those graves of our own making, the things that we've allowed to come into our hearts and bury us. That voice of Jesus is calling us this morning to rise up, to come back to life again. Amen.
Practical Steps To Stay Rooted
SPEAKER_04Buried underneath the lies that you believe, safe and sound, stuck in the ground, too lost to be found. You're just asleep. And it's time to leave. Come on, right, the ground group now.
SPEAKER_05And you hear the voice of Jesus calling us. Up from the Red Light glass groups in your brand. Our death could not hold you. And you hear the voice of Jesus calling us. Up from the Red Blood Classroom.
SPEAKER_04It was more than one. It's kind of one. Now we're all in the store. And the scroll's winning more. Yes, Lord. Yes, Jesus. Jesus. In the dark and all alone, growing comfortable. Are you too scared to move and walk out of this tomb? Buried underneath those lies that you believe. Safe and sound, stuck in the ground, too lost to be found.
