Christians In Recovery

Pastor Bob Ezatoff Season 2 Episode 37

A prophet on the brink of compromise, a king desperate for control, and a donkey who sees what pride refuses to notice—this message traces a startling road to grace and shows why every believer needs a lifelong recovery from sin. We start with Romans 3 and Luke 18 to ground the hard truth that all have sinned and the hopeful truth that God justifies the humble by faith. From there, we follow Balaam in Numbers 22 as he entertains Balak’s offer of honor and power, only to collide with the angel of the Lord and the mercy of correction. The turning point is unforgettable: the donkey bows; the prophet bristles; God intervenes.

We talk candidly about perfectionism, comparison, and the subtle slide from trusting Christ to trusting our spiritual resumes. The contrast between the fasting tither and the repentant tax collector exposes how religious pride can blind us faster than obvious failure. Then we explore the tension between God’s perfect will and permissive will, and how open doors are not always green lights. Sometimes divine love looks like a barricade, an interruption, or a voice we never expected. The real struggle is not with church, leaders, or friends—it is with God, who is rescuing us from a path that seems profitable but ends in loss.

Hope arrives where confession meets obedience. Balaam, who came to curse, blesses God’s people and announces a star rising out of Jacob—a scepter pointing to Jesus. That promise reframes recovery: God appoints, then anoints; He calls flawed people and equips them for faithfulness. We close by lifting our voices in worship—rising to sing because He saved, raised, and keeps us. If you’re weary, tempted, or stuck at a crossroads, this message invites you back into the program of grace, where Jesus breaks the yoke and leads you home.

If this encouraged you, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review so others can find it. Tell us: where is God inviting you to slow down, listen, and return to His path?

SPEAKER_00:

Hello, welcome to Valley Gospel Church. We are a non-denominational Pentecostal church located in Springdale, Pennsylvania. Our sole mission is to present the living truth of a risen Lord, Jesus Christ, to a remnant church and a lost world. So let's go into the service recorded live at Valley Gospel Church.

SPEAKER_01:

Judy's song is up and running. Incidentally, Donna, you did a great job of a very difficult recording, and it was it was pretty easy to put together. But I mentioned that to say this that uh we are just giving you an update. We are now in 65 countries preaching the gospel. Ah, yeah. So uh I don't have the number. Jeff asked me this morning how many total, and I don't I'll look that up and I'll let you know how many total have been downloaded, but I just think it's you know, when God has his hand on it, it moves. Amen. During uh our concert, well, this is a few years ago, Stephen Hill was in Harmerville. Stephen Hills was one of the Gathers, he went on to be with the Lord, but he gave us a bit of his testimony when he was here, and he told us a little bit about his past, that he was a carouser, a womanizer, a drug user, and how he realized as he saw his friends either die or end up in jail, uh, he knew that the ones who weren't dead were headed for hell. And he knew he himself was headed there. And when he gave his heart to the Lord and began trying to live right, and that's the operative here, trying to live right, he said, I won't lie to you. Sin can be fun. It's hard to quit, it's hard to stop. Sin can be fun for a little while, uh, but the end thereof is destruction. Uh I think we can many of us can testify to that. Sin always leads us to the pit, without exception, and we have to understand that every problem we encounter, every problem that we encounter is the result of sin. Always. Sin always takes you further than you wanted to go, keeps you longer than you wanted to stay, and costs you more than you were willing to pay. Always. Every heartbreak, every failed relationship, every confusion is the direct result of sin. This morning's message is not for the perfect man nor the perfect woman. Look, only Jesus was perfect. And if you're perfect in here this morning, there's no need to stay. Really isn't. Go to an early lunch, start the grill, watch a little NFL. If you're perfect, you don't need to be here. This message is for the imperfect, the flawed, the inconsistent, the up and down, in and out Christian. Uh for believers, I'll justify this in a bit, for believers like Abraham and Moses, the Apostle Paul, Peter, John, uh, this message is for imperfect sinners like me. Believers that need a never-ending program of addiction recovery. That's what we need. Recovery from sin. This message is for all of us who are in a lifelong process being Christians in recovery. So I'll ask you if you have your Bibles, we'll start in Romans. This is an odd message. A lot of scripture. We're going to relay an account in the Old Testament, but if you'll turn to Romans 3 and 19 to begin. Romans 3 and 19. I'll ask you whenever you get there, would you please stand in reverence to God's word? Romans 3, 19. Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore, by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight. For by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets. Even the righteousness of God, which is by faith of Jesus Christ, unto all and upon all them that believe, for there is no difference. For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Some of us have specific needs in our recovery program. Addiction recovery, divorce recovery, death of a loved one recovery, drug or alcohol recovery, unbelief recovery. But all of us, all of us need to be in God's recovery program. A lifelong process of being changed and conformed and transformed into an image of God. And I'll use for a subject Christians in recovery. Let's pray. Heavenly Father, Lord, thank you for today's message. Lord, I thank you for this timely message, an old testament uh base with a New Testament twist. Lord, thank you for allowing me and trusting me to bring your word. Lord, let this word be a lamp and a light. It is in the name of your precious, beloved, August, all-powerful, soon coming Son we pray. Amen and amen. Please be seated. All of us fall short of God's glory. All need to conform to the image of godliness. We come in lacking, we come up needy for one reason, because of sin. Anyone that tells you that when you become a Christian, that some power will overcome you and you'll never sin again isn't telling you the truth. They're not telling you the truth. And anyone that tells you that sin is your nature and there's nothing you can do about it, they're not telling you the truth either. You see, there's a fine line there. Neither side is right. While it's true that sin is inherent in every person born of a woman, there's something you can do about it. There's something you need to do about it if you want God to bless you. If you want Him to bless your career, your family, your business. If you want to live on the hallelujah side, there is something and there has to be something that you do about it. We all have to enter into that commitment to break that addiction to sin. Yeah, like Stephen said so many years ago, it can be fun. We need to break that addiction. Turn with me back to Luke. Luke 18. Luke 18 and 9. I know you're not passing numbers, but if you if you kind of flip through and get to the book of Numbers, put your finger in there because we're going there next. Luke 18 and 9. And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves, that they were righteous and despised others. Two men went up into the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee, the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself. God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are extortioners, unjust, adulterers, and even the publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess, and the publican standing afar off would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God, be merciful unto me, a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other. For every one that exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. All right, this is the story of the fasting tither, I like to call it. This group represented by this man were confident in their own perceived righteousness. Uh a misplaced confidence, I'll say. And maybe you're saying, Pastor, but you said last week that we were made into the righteousness of God. And can't we be confident in that? Of course we can. But our confidence isn't in us. Our confidence is in the Lord, who made us the righteousness of God, not in our becoming righteous or being righteous. Look, there's a danger, especially for established Christians. As we begin to walk with the Lord, sometimes there's this gap that develops in our minds. We think it's in our spirit, but it's in our mind. And we start to think in terms of separation. And I'm sure you've all heard some of these things. Christian good, the doubter bad. I go to church, I'm good. The ones that go on Christmas and Easter, bad. I was baptized in water, so I'm good. If you weren't in the water, bad. I was baptized in the Holy Ghost, good. Not baptized in the Holy Spirit, bad. Right? Let me take it denominationally. Pentecostal, good. Roman Catholic, bad. Do you see where this is going? Uh where it can lead to. That was the mistake of the fasting tither. The guy who was the fasting tither, that was his mistake. He said, Thank you that I'm not like other men. The fasting tither was not justified in God's sight. The poor sinner, the confessing repentant sinner, was. Think about that. Think about that. The fasting tither with the big hat and the Bible as big as the Magna Carta, not justified. Huh? The repentant sinner, who maybe doesn't even have a Bible, was. In Romans 3, where we started, we won't go back there, but Paul is asked this question. So, and he's asked with a lead in. So, Jews have a step up on Gentiles, right? In coming to Christ. And Paul's answer is not at all. Not at all. We're both under sin. There is none righteous. No, not one. All have turned away. All of us. You, me, Paul, the Pope, Billy Graham, all of us are in a recovery program for sin. And if we're not, we need to get into one. We need to be there. Through this Old Testament account in the book of Numbers, Numbers 22. This is kind of the all of that, all of that was just kind of introduction. This is the message. We will see through two powerful worldly men and a donkey how God brings us through into and through our recovery program. So let's start with 22 and 1. And the children of Israel set forward and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side of Jordan by Jericho. And Balak, the son of Zippor, and all that Israel had done to the Amorites. And Moab was sore afraid of the people because they were many, and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel. And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are around about us as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak, the son of Zippor, was king of the Moabites at that time. He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam, the son of the son of Beor and Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of the people to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, and behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me. Come now, therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people, for they are too mighty for me. Peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of this land, for I wot that he whom thou blessed is blessed, and he whom thou cursed is cursed. All right. I'll try to help you with this. Balak is the king of unbelieving Moabites. He has witnessed God's delivery of the children of Israel out of Egypt into a free people that were now covering the face of the earth in that time. He witnessed the Israelites' outstanding and astounding victory over the Amorites. He knew the power that the people of Israel possessed by their trust in the Most High, even though he didn't believe himself. He saw the power. Now Israel had pitched tents. In other words, they were expanding in the plains of Moab. And Balak and Moab were scared that Israel was moving in on them. That Israel would attack Moab even though they were a tiny army, a ragtag army. He knew their relationship with Jehovah and Balak knew they would be crushed. So Balak calls on Balaam. Balaam was an anointed prophet of God, but he left the recovery program. He was an anointed prophet, but he left the recovery program. Thought he was good. Thought he was good just like he was, had all these talents and attributes, and he left to pursue wealth and fame and notoriety. How many of you know? How many of you know so many people leave that recovery program? If Russell and Krista were here, they would tell you how many people walk away because they say, I got this now. I got this. Anointed of God, but didn't listen to what God was telling him. Because Balaam's worldly agenda ran contrary to God's will. In other words, he wanted things in his life that God said, nah, I don't think so. So he went his own way. Still anointed, still a man of God, but his desire didn't match God's will. But God allows him every opportunity. He nurtures him, he coaxes him to come back in the program just as the Holy Spirit does with us. Where are you going? Come on back. Come back. Come back into fellowship with me. Come back into communion with me when we stray, when we're down, when things don't turn out just the way we thought they should or would. God the Holy Spirit is saying, come on back. Let's think this through. Let's talk this through. King Balak calls on this, let's just call him out of the spirit prophet of God, Balaam. And he asked him to curse Israel so that they won't take out over Moab like they did the Amorites. And here's the first really interesting part that the Holy Spirit revealed to me how that unbelief or doubt looks to a religious form for help. We know when we've walked out of the recovery program and yeah, I'm not going to church anymore, I'm done with that. We still look to a religious program for help, whether it's teret or horoscope or crystals or yoga or meditation, we still look to that religious form. And even though they rejected God, Balak, they knew that even in his fallen state, his out of the spirit state, Balaam had quite a reputation as someone who heard from God, as someone who did marvelous and powerful things in God's sight. And in exchange, this is good, in exchange for Balaam cursing Israel, Moab and Balak offered a reward of divination. That he would give him powers of divination. You see, Satan tempts us in our weakness. Whatever weakness that we had, Satan tempts in that area. Until he sees it's futile, then he'll open a different door. But he tempts Balaam with power and prestige and notoriety and riches if he'll just take if he'll just take one more step toward darkness. Just one little step. You don't have to leap, just a little step toward darkness. He was some kind of high witch, priestess. But I think you'll see at the end of this message that every scriptural reference tells us that wherever he fell at this point in his life, he was a true believer. He was a worshiper of God. He was a prophet of Jehovah. And we'll also see that in his heart he must have loved God. In his heart of hearts, he loved God because God will use him to deliver a series of the prophetic that will prove to be the most astounding ever given. Ever. Church, God appoints. God appoints, then he anoints. Okay? He calls you to him, calls you to a particular field, and then anoints you for service. He didn't call you anointed that, oh, you got this. He calls you in our frailties, in our difficulties, in our shortcomings, and then he anoints you to complete the task. We're given the opportunity to either, after we're saved, we're given the opportunity to either follow him, that is, get in the program, or go our own way. I'm saved now, I got it. And proceed forward in our own resources and power. Let me tell you this. Jesus has a perfect plan for your life. Everyone in here, everyone. He has a perfect plan for your life. Regardless of what you've done, regardless of where you've been, you have been chosen to work for the Lord, for his cause, irrespective of who you are, your race, ethnicity, gender, what you've done, level of education, doesn't matter. Doesn't matter. The things you may have said, Jesus has called you. And if you accept that call, if you've said yes, or if you will say yes to the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, if that's your decision, huh? That's just the start. That's just the beginning. We all quit, John. We all quit. I got saved. I got, okay, I'm done. No, no, no. Just the start. Just the beginning. And then if you allow him, the Holy Spirit starts to anoint you, equip you for service, beginning with the baptism in the Holy Ghost for power, for prayer, for patience, for perseverance, for a connection to the kingdom. There's a ministry of Jensen Franklin, kingdom connection. That's who the Holy Spirit is. He's our kingdom connection. Glory. He leads us deeper in his word, stronger in his might, confident in his presence. Showing you a more excellent way. A more excellent way. Still in 22, 9. And God came unto Balaam and said, What men are these with thee? And Balaam said unto God, Balak, the son of Zippor, I love the way the way the Lord has to give us his uh where he came from, who his parents are, so that it's that it's clear. He's not talking about anyone else. Son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent unto me, saying, Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt which covereth the face of the earth. Come now, curse me them, peradventure. I shall be able to overcome them and drive them out. And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them. Thou shalt not curse the people, for they are blessed. Balaam goes to God. He explains what Balak and this group of people, what they want, what they desire him to do, to curse Israel. God says, No. Israel's blessed. Balak offers Balaam even more to ignore God's command. I'm sure Balaam went and said, Yeah, I don't know what I can do for you now, because God said not to do that. So he offers him even more to ignore God's command. 15. And Balak sent yet again princes, more and more honorable than they. And they came to Balaam and said unto him, Thus saith Balak, the son of Zippor, let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me. For I will promote thee unto a very great honor. I will do whatever you say unto me. Come, therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people. He offers him honor and power and prestige. Some feel that he may have been offered a kingship of a country, to take over a country. Doesn't that sound familiar to you? Doesn't that sound familiar almost what Satan offers Jesus? All you see, I'll give you if you'll just fall down and worship me. Little bend, come on, a little bow. I don't require much. You don't have to stay there long. The purpose was the same. Disobey God, sin. He's offering every one of us the same thing. He offers the same thing to every church in the land this morning. Every pastor has a decision to make today. Satan tempts and he offers. Don't preach about supernatural power. Your people aren't ready for that. They can't handle that. Don't teach Christ is the only way. You alienate too many. Don't talk about the last days or antichrist. That's just a fable. That's just a symbol. Don't talk about sin. No such thing. God knows. He understands. We're weak. Teach all teach all roads lead to Christ. You can get there any way you want. Through a tree, through a creek, through a through a river, through a beautiful forest, through a butterfly, you can get there. Amen. Teach that Allah, Buddha, and Muhammad are Christs. And give out the information that all religion is the same. Assimilate with the religions of the world. If you do, in exchange, this is what Bailah. Jack offered Balaam, and he's offering every pastor every Sunday. If you do, you will, in exchange, you'll be accepted by the world. You won't be ridiculed anymore. They'll stop calling you a pansy boy or a pansy girl. You'll be a purposeful entity in the fabric of society. Oh, and by the way, you'll make some money too. You'll make a good living. To those churches, those pastors that heed the call for glory and acceptance and finance, you will find yourself in the battle with God and a battle that's unwinnable. It's unwinnable. Verse 20. And God came unto Balaam at night and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up and go with them, but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, thou shalt do. God gives Balaam permission to go, but tells him, Okay, but here's what I want you to say. 21. And Balaam rose up in the morning, saddled an ass, and went with the prince princes of Moab, and God's anger was kindled because he went. And the angel of the Lord stood in the way as an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and two servants were with him. God tells him he can go, right? But is upset that he goes. What? And I know that sounds like, all right, you said I could go, but now you're mad that I went. What's the deal? But that's a whole different sermon on permissive and perfect will of God. But at every juncture in our lives, mine and yours, God tests us. He gives us chances and opportunities to react. He gives us, he wants to see what we will do with the opportunity that he has entrusted us with. And even though Balaam was given permission, God was angry with him for a couple of reasons. One is he knew Balaam was going anyway, whether God said go ahead and go or didn't say it. And he also knew that he would curse Israel to reap worldly rewards. Worldly harvest. Alright, now it gets interesting. 23. And the ass saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and the sword drawn in his hand, and the ass turned aside out of the way and went into the field, and Balaam smote the ass to turn her in the way. The angel of the Lord actually went to block Balaam's way as he's going to Balak and Moab. In the Old Testament, the term angel of the Lord sometimes means God himself. Or the pre-incarnate Christ showed up. It's called a theophany. In Hebrew, it's called Melox. It's when God shows up in person and the Bible calls it an angel of the Lord. Imagine seeing a manifestation of God, of God Almighty, Jehovah, the great I am, Yahweh, standing in your path. Standing on the little trail that you're heading to Moab. I don't know about you, but that would get my attention. My complete attention. Wealth and preeminence and power that he doesn't even see him. He doesn't even see God. He doesn't even see this angel of the Lord in the way. Think about that. Are we sometimes so driven by success by securing our business or to win that woman or win that man to build that church to be recognized as someone powerful? So preoccupied with bills and health that we miss what God is showing us. We miss it. We miss his leading. And we don't receive the message that he's trying to send us. And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she fell down under Balaam, and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff. And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee that thou hast smitten me these three times? The donkey that Balaam is riding on sees the Lord. He sees the flaming, she sees the flaming sword, uh, and falls down in the presence of Almighty God. It goes back to our beginning today, and even though animals will praise him. Amen. The rocks, the animals. And Balaam gets a stick and starts to beat the donkey. When we're failing to see God, when we're failing to see him as the answer to our problem, our issue, when we walk out on our own Christian recovery program, when we say, I got it, and someone tries to lovingly direct us. Don't we take our wrath out on the vehicle? What do you mean by that? When we don't recognize the Lord, do we blame a brother or a sister who try to give us help, who try to lead us and guide us? They think they know. They don't you don't know me. Don't you don't you tell me what I where I'm going wrong? He better he better clean up his own backyard before he starts telling me. We blame the church, we blame music, we blame elders. Uh we say the church doesn't have any activities, they have too many activities, too many altar calls, not enough altar calls. We blame the pastor, he's too negative, always talking about repentance, too positive, always talking about abundance. Uh he doesn't he doesn't greet me with a hug. He's too huggy. Always speaking, always speaking with other tongues. Never I heard, I don't hear him speak in other tongues. Can he be Pentecostal? I don't know. I'll let you in on something. I can't walk on water, nor can I turn it to wine. Hallelujah. My only attribute, my only redeeming virtue is I know one who can. Glory. And I can hook the two of you up. Glory. His name is Jesus. His name is Jesus. His name is Jesus. He breaks the yoke. He treads the wine press. He walks the water. Jesus breaks every fetter. He'll bear your burden. He will make your darkness light. It's not church teachings, it's not pastoral counsel that you're wrestling with. It's God. It's God that you're fighting with. None of them can set you free. Jesus can. Jesus can. He turns our morning to dancing. Kurt, Jesus is the Jubilee. He is the Jubilee. Glory. 31. I'm hurrying. Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn his hand, his sword drawn in his hand, and he bowed down his head and fell flat on his face. And the angel of the Lord said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? Behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me. And the ass saw me and turned from me these three times, unless she had turned from me, listen to this, unless she had turned from me, surely now also I would have slain thee and saved her alive. And Balaam said unto the angel of the Lord, I have sinned, for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me. Now therefore, if it is if if it displease thee, I will get me back again. The Lord now speaks directly to Balaam. Incidentally, I I don't know if I mentioned that it was actually the ass that spoke with Balaam and said, Why are you hitting me? It was actually the donkey that turned and spoke to him. Why are you hitting me? After forcing Balaam to see the angel of the Lord, he tells him that had the donkey not fallen, had that donkey not fallen on the ground, the angel of the Lord said, I was gonna kill you. I was gonna cut you to ribbons. So it's the donkey that saved you. Uh he would have killed Balaam instead of the donkey. Balaam acknowledges his sin, he falls on his face before God and he starts to worship. Only God only God knows his sincerity. Only God knows your sincerity this morning. When you enter his program for the addicted, only he knows. Only he knew Pharaoh's heart, or Saul's heart, or David's heart, or Jim Baker's heart, or Jimmy Swagger's heart, only God All of them said the same word. I have thin again, my God. And we'll know by their fruit. We'll know by their fruit. Don't give up on someone that's humble and fall. Someone that is rumbling. Don't give up on the praying. They were they were spiritually mature. Spiritually mature. The things I hate I do. The things I could do, I don't. Spiritually mature Moses. Spiritually mature Abraham denied his own wife in front of a foreign king. Imagine if you will. And this is, I guess, this is what I've been trying to bring all morning. Imagine walking into a recovery meeting and saying Abraham and Paul and Moses and David. This is our recovery meeting. Amen. That's who we are. But God is a restorer. God is in the restoration. Don't give up on Balaam. Instead of cursing, he turned and blessed Israel. And this is the best part of this message that I'll close with. Twenty-four. Twenty-four and sixteen. He has said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the Most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty falling into a trance, but having his eyes open. I shall see him, but not now. I shall behold him, but not nigh. There shall come a star out of Jacob, and the scepter shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Shepherd. And Edom shall be put into a possession, and sear also shall be a possession for his enemies, and Israel shall do valiantly. Maybe the most profound prophetic utterance ever given. Even though Balaam is inconsistent, he's at one point selling God's power. He's uh has unrepentant sin all throughout his life. God speaks through him and reveals to him the Savior of the world. Tell the people this there shall come a star out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel, and he shall have dominion. Glory, glory, glory. Listen carefully, and I'll end with this phrase. Through a fallen and a failed prophet, God reveals the coming of Jesus the Christ. My mind. As my sister Emily always told me, this is her Bible, but she always told me, whenever I expressed any doubt or any concern about my calling, she would tell me maybe this wasn't even complimentary. She would say, God spoke through an ass. You think he can't use you? Thank you for listening.
