Freedom's Song
What happens when faith, freedom, and transformation collide in today’s world? Join us as we reflect on the profound legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the critical importance of standing against evil. We'll explore the intersection of faith and modern society, analyzing recent election outcomes and the voting behaviors of both religious and non-religious communities, while expressing a heartfelt yearning for a moral compass to guide social progress.
Imagine a world where Christians truly embrace the liberation offered by Jesus Christ. Yet, many live trapped in a mindset of bondage. Discover the keys to unlocking the freedom song within your own spiritual journey. Through scriptures from Galatians, Romans, and Hebrews, we illuminate the path to joy that seems elusive for many believers today, emphasizing that freedom is not a one-time experience but a continuous choice that transforms our lives.
Take a moment to consider the metaphor of curing raw olives, representing spiritual growth under pressure. Sharing personal stories and biblical insights, we draw parallels between the crushing process of olives and the fortification of faith through adversity. Experience the calming presence of Jesus during life’s storms and the enduring gratitude that leads to profound spiritual transformation. As we journey deeper into divine love, we invite you to reimagine your spiritual path and the endless possibilities of faith renewal.
Thank you, jesus. God will open. He'll open up the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing. My God will open. He'll open up the windows of heaven and He'll pour you out a blessing. My God will open. He'll open up the windows of heaven, he'll pour you out a blessing, and you will not have the room, not because of you, but because he's good, and you will not have the room to receive him.
Speaker 3:Hello Welcome to Valley Gospel Church. We are a non-denominational Pentecostal church located in Springdale, pennsylvania. Hello Welcome to Valley Gospel Church. We are a non-denominational Pentecostal church located in Springdale, pennsylvania. Our sole mission is to present the living truth of a risen Lord Jesus Christ to a remnant church and a lost world.
Speaker 4:Let's get into the service recorded live at Valley Gospel Church. Diedrich Bonhoeffer is I mean, I know we talked about him a couple of months ago, but if you don't know, he was a Lutheran pastor in Nazi Germany in the 30s and 40s and he was put to death by the Gestapo for resisting and speaking out politically about the assault and murder of six million Jews. So many of his quotes, his messages and sermons mean a lot to me. They inspire me as a man. They inspire me as a man, they inspire me as a pastor. But one of the quotes attributed to him and I know it's come under some consternation now that maybe he never said it, but I'm not going to argue that whether he said it or whether he didn't, but it's the core of today's message and here it is Silence in the face of evil is evil itself, and God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak, not to act, is to act. You know we as Christians weren't silent this week on election day, and I'm waiting still for some of the some of the receipts to come in on who voted, who didn't, but I do have some of these. But 56% of Roman Catholics voted Trump. 62% of evangelical Christians voted for Trump. Non-believers, non-believers those that profess whether it be atheism or no belief 25% voted for Trump, 72% for Harris. Born-again Christians not a term that I like or use, but that's the term that Christianity today had but born-again Christians 80% for Trump. And again, while I don't, I really want to see the numbers of how many Christians actually voted, and we'll see that in the next couple of weeks. Christians actually voted and we'll see that in the next couple of weeks. But what I wanted to start with and, as I said, the Lord turned this all around I had a completely different message in the can, ready to go, and Thursday he said nope, nope. And Thursday he said nope.
Speaker 4:Regarding the election last week. Over the last few days, we've seen such a display If you have listened or watched anything, such an outcry. On one side there's joy and celebration and wow, we're going to get all this done, and on the other, sadness and rage and disbelief. And look, while I am certainly pleased with the outcome, my political leaning is only colored by my unmovable spiritual anchor Only. I am a preacher of the gospel. I am not a political person. I am not a political junkie. I am not connected to any of this I think Ted said it Really not interested in some of those things. That doesn't interest me. I'm a preacher of the gospel but it seems the media and certain segments of our society if you've watched anything really don't want anything to turn good, really don't want things to become positive, really don't want a moral compass.
Speaker 4:And the Lord pointed out to me, right after he changed the message, that it has become the same way in his church, or maybe better put, that it's become the same in this last day's religious remnant. See, there's two remnants. There's a remnant, the true church. There's also a religious remnant that's still hanging on to the sweater, vests and the collars and the big hats and the swipe cards still holding on and the swipe card's still holding on.
Speaker 4:We've seen over the last three years a worldwide drop in church attendance, in fellowship membership, by, in some places, greater than 50%, and I think the numbers are. Well, I'm not sure of the numbers now, so I'll leave it alone. And even among those who are attending churches today, for so many, it's to keep a tradition. My dad went, my mother went, my grandmother went. This is our church. This is where we were married. This is our church. This is where we were married. This is where they buried my, and that becomes the crux of why we're in attendance, keeping a tradition, maybe to assuage a guilty conscience about a past life that we had or to make sure there's someone to marry us or bury us in the future.
Speaker 4:The Lord made it very clear to me how this saddens him that his house of deliverance, of healing, of impartation of truth of power and prayer has become a house of boredance, of healing, of impartation of truth of power and prayer has become a house of boredom and tradition and bondage and deception, where there is no victory, there is no changed issues, there are no changed lives, there is no joy, there is no freedom. And you know, when that becomes a truth, when that becomes a reality as to how we conduct ourselves, then Ichabod needs to be written on the door. The spirit of the Lord has departed. Isn't it sad? Isn't it sad when a Christian endures life oh, I'm slugging through One for bad luck. I wouldn't have any luck for bad luck. I wouldn't have any luck Can't even recognize the good things, the blessings, the miracles God has provided.
Speaker 4:It seems that so many Christians today are waiting for the next pain, the next slight, the next offense, the next lack, the next hurt, and there's always something missing, always something missing, always something that eludes this remnant religious organization. But a voice inside keeps whispering there must be more. There's got to be more. There's got to be more to church, there's got to be more to Christianity. There must be more. There has to be a life without guilt, there has to be a life without anxiety or fear. Yet it holds Christians captive, prisoners. A slave held by tradition and lies, enslaved in a pit of despair, bound by what we think our limitations are, what we can and cannot do and what seems impossible. Look, the question isn't can God deliver a Christian from that bondage and that slavery? Absolutely he can. The question is, can he remove that slavery from a Christian? Christy, let's go to work.
Speaker 4:Some 500 years prior to the birth of Jesus, a prophet named Isaiah prophesied that Yahweh would send the Messiah. The Messiah's name was Yeshua and he would provide freedom for all. Amen. If you turn with Chrissy, please, to Luke 4. Luke 4. Luke 4. Now, this verse that Chrissy's going to read is 500 years later, as Jesus stood in the synagogue I just like to say this early on a Saturday morning, and he read from the scroll of Isaiah that prophesied his coming, and he reminded every believer, and he reminded the entirety of the world what Isaiah said. Isaiah 4 and 17. 17 through 21.
Speaker 5:And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Isaiah, and when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them who are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book and he gave it to again, gave it again to the minister and sat down and the eyes of all them who were in the synagogue were fastened on him and he began to say unto them this day is the scripture fulfilled in your ears.
Speaker 4:Amen. I really thought the title was going to come out of that last verse. Jesus told everyone assembled there and he told the world that his mission was every man, every woman, every child could be free, free from sin, free from bondage, free from addiction, because, over every darkness, over every oppression, every bondage, he had the power and he had the authority. And he would give that power and that authority to every follower, not just the believer. I think we drew a line last week difference between a believer and a follower. Amen, he would give that to every follower. Believing isn't enough. The Bible tells us that even the devil believes. He gave me this morning a changed message that I didn't intend, not the message that I announced Wednesday night, but a message entitled Freedom Song, freedom Song.
Speaker 4:Let's pray, heavenly Father. Thank you, lord, thank you for this, thank you for this reality, lord, thank you for this, uh, this glimpse of heavenly truth, lord, of how you want your children to act, to be, to to see what you want for us as 21st century Christians, lord, what our duty, what our call is. Lord, I ask you to open your word this morning. Let it be a lamp unto our feet, a light to our paths. It is in the name of your precious Son we pray. Amen and amen. Please be seated, be seated. Amen and amen, amen, please be seated. So here's the question. Here's the question as to where we are in this day, this time, where we are in this culture, in the climate, presently in the church. Presently in the church.
Speaker 4:If, if, if, if Jesus came to liberate his children believers, if that's the case and the world unbelievers in a different way, but not part of today's message if he came to free us, if he came to bring liberty, why do we continue on in that same mentality of being in bondage? Why do we continue in that same slave mentality and look in a complete revelation of truth? In the last year or so, I sense a move away from that religious slavery that has kept us in bondage for so long. I sense the Holy Spirit moving churches and pastors and church leaders away from that, back into a right relationship with Jesus Christ. But I believe that is the question the Lord asks over and over and over why? Why?
Speaker 4:The Holy Spirit spoke to the Galatians in the fifth chapter and he said brothers, you have been called to liberty. Jesus has set you free, don't get tangled, stay free, don't get tangled up in bondages again. He told the Romans the glorious freedom that he had received in Jesus Christ. Told the Hebrews in all of these books there's a full and complete freedom in Jesus. In essence, he said sing freedom song. What are you doing? Sing freedom song.
Speaker 4:It must be so frustrating to our Lord, to our Savior, so frustrating, that so few of his creation accept his offer of salvation and freedom so few. But of course the Bible tells us that, doesn't it? Narrow is the way, straight is the gate that leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Paul said we fall short of true freedom because why did he the reason that the apostle Paul gave? We fall short because we don't really believe. That's what he told a congregation. I don't know if that's the way to win friends and influence people or not. That's what he told a congregation. I don't know if that's the way to win friends and influence people or not. That's what he told them. You fall short because you don't believe.
Speaker 4:He promised his promise of freedom to you, to me, to the Galatians, to the Romans, to the Hebrews. Still stands today, that promise still stands. And listen, the overriding result of a Christian's freedom, of our freedom. Do you know what the outstanding result is? Joy, joy, joy. But aren't we a joyless bunch? And not the joy of a political party or the joy we heard about during the campaign. Not that joy, the joy of knowing Christ, the joy of knowing your eternal security. The joy of knowing Christ, the joy of knowing your eternal security, the joy of knowing your destination for millions and millions and millions of years. Hallelujah, that's our song of freedom. That's our song of freedom, truth that brings joy, joy unspeakable and full of glory. And the half has never yet been told. My, you don't even know the half of it, don't even know the half of all that brings joy.
Speaker 4:Every chapter in the Bible 1189 chapters in the Bible, all 66 books ultimately comes to rest. Every book, every Old Testament, new Testament ultimately comes to rest. Every book, every Old Testament, new Testament ultimately comes to rest on God's beloved son, jesus. Every verse, every verse. And the end of knowing him is freedom, and the byproduct of freedom is joy, glory. So why are so many Christians joyless? Why so hopeless, why so oppressed?
Speaker 4:Look, in the Bible, christianity begins with joy Joy to the world, the Lord has come and it ends in the book of Revelation, singing a song of joy around the throne, and everything in between is joy. The psalmist said happy is he whose hope is in the Lord. There's a question as to whether David said that or not. He said to the counselors of peace there is joy, glory. Nehemiah said the joy of the Lord is our strength. Job said lift your heart, sing for joy. Proverbs said a fool has no joy. Isaiah said break forth with joy, my goodness. Jeremiah said you have turned my mourning to joy. It's filled Acts said. Paul said on his death, he's on his way to death. And he said I finished my course with joy. My Romans said our joy is where, denise. Our joy is in the Holy Ghost. Our joy comes through the Holy Ghost.
Speaker 4:You know, I said last week that this book isn't a good book, and it's not. Jesus isn't a good man. The Holy Ghost isn't an influence or a force, or a vapor or a sweet-smelling savor. No, the Holy Ghost is God, the Holy Ghost. Jesus is the King of the universe. Glory, hallelujah. And the Holy Ghost isn't an influence or a force, he is God. The Holy Ghost't an influence or a force, he is God, the Holy Ghost. This book changes lives. This book changes hearts. This book sets the captives free. Glory, so we can sing freedom song. So we can sing freedom song. And here's the point of the message. All this was kind of just getting to here. Freedom is a choice. Freedom's a choice. We can accept Jesus and his offer of salvation but reject his offer of freedom. We can accept salvation I'm saved, I have eternity secure but reject the freedom that he came to deliver. You say, how is that possible?
Speaker 4:I remember our brother, bill Smelcher. A couple of you remember him I know Jeff does but he was a guard at PPG and came to church off and on and he's gone to be with the Lord now. But I remember while he was working at PPG his daughter died, his wife died and he had a cow. He was a farmer and he had a cow that broke seven of his ribs, broke his arm, dislocated his shoulder, and this all happened like in one season. And I remember him telling me seeing him. We would see him at the guard station when we'd sign in. And I remember him telling me right after he told me he said the cow won the battle, I'll win the war. But he said, pastor, I don't get too upset about these things, I choose joy, I choose joy. I choose joy, I choose joy.
Speaker 4:And maybe that seems to you a little too simplistic, maybe a head in the sand, ignoring the onslaught of life, the pains of family relationships, of life's bondages, of that Friday night where the Holy Ghost is telling you go home, go home, go home. And you choose to go instead to the club. Maybe you're thinking that's not your view, is way too simplistic, brother, trying to keep faith when things around us seem to be falling apart. You know, if you're battling a health issue, it can be hard to count it all joy. When there's a new pain, a new test result or an upcoming doctor's appointment that you're not looking forward to, it can be hard to sing freedom song. I know that.
Speaker 4:Look, this gospel is simple, it's not easy. This gospel is simple but it's not easy. This gospel is simple but it's not easy. But if you really know Jesus, if you are a Christ follower, then you are saved, you are set aside, you are cleansed by his blood, you have eternal life. You have a robe of white, a crown of gold, a harp, a home, a mansion fair. You've been endued with power.
Speaker 4:For those of you who have the baptism in the Holy Spirit. You have been endued with power from on high. You have 24-7 access to the throne room of your king, who hears and answers prayer. Your best friend is your Lord and Savior. Jesus is the one who speaks and the winds obey. Jesus is the creator of all.
Speaker 4:Jesus is the fourth man in the fire. Jesus is the way and the truth and the life. Jesus is the glory and the lifter of my head, hallelujah. Jesus is the author and finisher of my faith. Jesus is the everlasting father, the prince of peace. He's our soon coming King. Jesus, jesus, something about that name.
Speaker 4:Jesus, he's the one who will stand across the plain of Megiddo, between the Tigris and the Euphrates River, eyes as flames of fire, hair white like wool and with a voice that sounds like thunder, without a sword being drawn. Satan will be on the other side of that same plane, beelzebub the devil. The same battlefield been a battlefield many times, and without a sword even being drawn. He will fall to his knees and proclaim he is Lord, my, my. That's your best friend, that's your bestie, my. He sticks closer than a brother. What do we have to be sad about? You're right, jeffy, nothing. We need to sing freedom song In the Beatitudes, matthew 5,.
Speaker 4:I won't spend a lot of time there, but the teaching in the Beatitudes is centered on freedom, freedom. There is one I'd like to focus on, that is the poor, and the Beatitudes is centered on freedom, freedom. There is one I'd like to focus on, that is the poor in the spirit, the poor in the spirit. Blessed are the poor in the spirit, for they shall inherit the earth, amen. Blessed are the poor in spirit, those that have kept the faith through adversity, through family picking on you, through family telling you, yeah, and you have been ostracized and criticized, marginalized, been called a hater and a bigot and a homophobe and a xenophobe. Those of us who have been surrounded not only in our communities but in our families, have been surrounded by dysfunction and find it impossible to accept boys and girls, rooms and men beating up women and mutilation of our children and murder of our unborn and the deception that has enveloped society. And as believers we are treated. We are labeled as fringe crazies. No, this is all good. No, this is wonderful. The oppression has seemed nearly insurmountable at times, but today, today, we sing freedom song From the crushing blows of the devil over the last 50 years pushing the church deeper and further, down and out. Jesus will pick us up. Jesus will pick us up A crushed olive, how many of you know?
Speaker 4:Oh, all right time, for I'm in the process of curing raw olives. The day I got out of was released from surgery, because raw olives are only available for a really short period of time. You can only get them during, like, the World Series. That's what they always when the World Series is on. You got to get your raw olives. So the day that I got out of surgery, I told Arabella we got to go and get olives. So the day that I got out of surgery, I told her but we got to go and get olives, and raw olives if you've ever ate any, they're terrible, they're awful. I mean, they're inedible, they're bitter, they're they're. If any of you ever opened an acorn and ate an acorn as a kid, that's what a raw olive is like. But I put this 10 pounds of raw olives, beautiful green, and you cure them. Well, there's a bunch of ways to cure them, but I'm curing them. It's a water cure, that you put them in water for about 10 days and you change the water every day or a couple times a day getting rid of the tan and the bitterness. And then you have to crush them to get the pit out, you have to give them a little whack to get the pit out, but these bitter pills that are inedible, at the end of this time we're left with the sweetest olive, the sweetest olive oil that you can imagine. I hope you're picking up what I'm putting down about the analogy to our time. It's going to take some time, it's going to take some curing, but we will end up with the sweetest oil you can imagine.
Speaker 4:The church does its best work under pressure. We do our best under persecution. A little bit of a crushing. A smashed grape produces new wine. A smashed grape produces new wine, but you got to crush it to get it. A crushed rose, sweet perfume, but you got to smash it. Hallelujah. When an atom is crushed, george, it unleashes power that would light a million cities. The church does its best work under persecution. When a Christian is crushed by hurt or oppression or offense, we become a warrior. We become a warrior, we get better, not bitter Hallelujah. Empowered to turn the tide of evil, to petition the throne and set the captives free. Let freedom ring, hallelujah. Matthew 14. Matthew 14 and 22.
Speaker 4:In straight way, jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship and go before him unto the other side while he sent the multitudes away. When he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray, and when evening was come he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves, for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were troubled, saying it is a spirit, and they cried out in fear. But straightway, jesus spake unto them saying Be of good cheer, it is, I be not afraid.
Speaker 4:Just a quick background here. Jesus had just come from feeding the 5,000 with a few loaves, a few fishes. The disciples go fishing, I don't know why, maybe get their head right after what they had just witnessed, that all these baskets full of fish and bread showed up. And how many of you know that you go back. You know, whenever I'm struggling with anything, I go out in the yard and dig something, prune something, because that's where I get peace, that's where I get my peace. It just seems pretty common. But while they're out fishing, a storm blows up. The sea's rough, it's cold, it's raining. Their backs ache, their arms hurt, their hands are blistered and bloody and they see a figure on the water coming to them. They think it's a ghost, they think it's an apparition. I don't know why, maybe lack of sleep, maybe just exhaustion, but Jesus speaks.
Speaker 4:Well, let me tell you what he didn't say. First, he didn't say how you doing boys, you okay. He didn't say how you doing boys, you okay. He didn't say let me get you something for those blisters. Okay, let me fix that, let me rub those blisters for you. That's not what he said. Here's what he did say yeah. You didn't say, oh, these waves are high. No, he said cheer up, I'm here, cheer up. He's saying the same things to everyone in here this morning. Don't worry, I'm with you, hallelujah. The storms of life might be rough, you may be hurting, but be of good cheer. It is I. It is I, the master of the universe, is restoring our souls. Your cup is running over. Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow you all the days of your life and you'll dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Speaker 4:I wonder, I wonder, on that Saturday morning that he walked into the synagogue so long ago when he read from the scroll of Isaiah, I wonder. As he prophesied of his coming, I wondered how many believed that he was the one in the prophecy. I wonder how many people gathered there believed he was the one. Or was he just? He was a talented guy, he was an anointed guy, but I don't know. If he's this guy, I wonder how many believed he was the one in prophecy, the one that would bruise the serpent's head? The one who perfectly kept the law Hallelujah? The one upon whose shoulders the government of the kingdom would rest? The one who could remit sin? I wonder if they really believed the one who would beit sin? I wonder if they really believed the one who would be crucified and rise again? The one who returned to heaven and sent the Comforter so that we would have a counselor To enliven, to empower every believer. I wonder how many believed then, and I wonder how many believed then, and I wonder how many believe today. I wonder how many really believe now. I think that number is much smaller than we might think, but his promise still stands that all may enter his rest.
Speaker 4:Jesus said come unto me all you that labor and a heavy laden eye will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, learn of me. My yoke is easy. My burden is light. Jesus was sent to liberate us, to set our spirits free from every bondage that grips you, that takes you to a place. And let me just give you a warning Whatever the bondage may be in our life, when that bondage comes it always takes you to a place of isolation. See, the devil wants to isolate. He wants to get you alone. He wants to keep you out of community, out of fellowship, isolated from God's presence and his promise, from every free, from every trap set by the enemy that tries to drag you back to a pit of despair.
Speaker 4:This morning, sing freedom song From every chain of slavery that links you back to the misery that you've left so many times. Today, sing freedom song, glory, from that religious shackle that entices you, as it won't do any harm to light a candle, to repeat an affirmation, to say a mantra. Today, sing freedom song From every prison of our mind, locked in bitterness and confusion. Sing freedom song From guilt of our past, what we did, what we can never, in our minds, be forgiven for. Today, sing freedom song From a day-to-day existence of worry and fear and anxiety today. Accept his promise, accept his truth, tell him you're all in All in. I believe. I do believe I am free, yes, free indeed. Wow, remember I told you, when the anointing lifts, it's like cold water just got poured on you. I'm done, hallelujah. Thank you so much for listening. Georgie, would you close us? Would you stand?
