Who's Driving the Car?

Pastor Bob Ezatoff Season 1 Episode 28

Have you ever felt stuck in a loop, hearing the same message over and over, and wondered if perhaps there's a deeper meaning behind it? That's exactly what we explore at Valley Gospel Church, where Theodore Gardner leads our community through a week of unexpected repetition. With laughter and sincerity, we discuss the importance of integrating children into the main sanctuary service and reflect on the powerful lesson of trusting in divine guidance, even when the message seems familiar. We start with a prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit to guide us and encourage an alignment with God's will.

Imagine realizing that in moments of crisis, like the ones inspired by Carrie Underwood's "Jesus, Take the Wheel," the real challenge isn't just seeking help but in fully surrendering control. We share personal stories and biblical truths, questioning whether we've genuinely given everything to Jesus. Through the teachings of Philippians, Matthew, and 2 Timothy, we confront our spiritual journeys, challenging ourselves to move from mere appearances to deeper, authentic faith. It's about embracing the full power of godliness and letting go of worldly attachments that hold us back.

The episode wraps up with a profound exploration of God's unconditional love and the personal relationship we can have with Him. Highlighting the sacrificial love demonstrated through Jesus Christ, we express gratitude and worship, underscoring how this divine love is akin to a compassionate parent sharing in our joys and sorrows. This moving discussion encourages embracing divine love and strengthening bonds with God, offering solace and healing through life's trials. Join us in this journey of spiritual renewal and commitment as we share the comforting grace found in a personal relationship with Jesus.

Speaker 1:

Thank you, jesus. God will open, he'll open up the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing. My God will open. He'll open up the windows of heaven and He'll pour you out a blessing. My God will open. He'll open up the windows of heaven, he'll pour you out a blessing, and you will not have the room, not because of you, but because he's good, and you will not have the room To receive Him.

Speaker 2:

Hello, welcome to Valley Gospel Church. We are a non-denominational Pentecostal church located in Springdale, pennsylvania. Our sole mission is to present the living truth of a risen Lord Jesus Christ to a remnant church in a lost world. So let's go into the service recorded live at Valley Gospel Church.

Speaker 3:

Amen, amen, amen. You all know that from time to time I ask all of the students Sunday school students to stay in the sanctuary. I think it's so important, as Debbie alluded to, that our kids get comfortable and familiar with what's happening in the church, and this is one of those days. So we're canceling all the Sunday school classes. I know they get the word there and they're growing, but every once in a while I like to keep them up here. So there will be no Sunday school today and I'm going to ask our brother, theodore Gardner, to bring us the word.

Speaker 4:

I don't know. I feel like I'm just supposed to dismiss the church now. It's really been different this week. Amen, I think I've got to start by telling you please don't be bored today. Everything in this notebook was in there by Tuesday. And then Wednesday, carlette came up for Bible study and went through half of it without knowing it. And if that wasn't enough, jamie came up this morning and finished the other half. So everything you're going to hear today, you've heard several times this week already.

Speaker 4:

So I asked the Lord then, why am I here? And the question is it's not for you to ask If there's some reason for the repetitive message. I can't tell you what it is right now, but I'm sure that he has a reason for it, amen. I sat down there and I said, well, maybe I'm supposed to change something real quick. And I had an idea and I started to look in the Bible and I couldn't find it. It's not in there anymore. So I guess I got to stay with the original plan. Good morning, I can't pray like that, I can't sing like that, but for some reason God has me up here today. So join me in prayer before we start. Heavenly Father, I just pray that this repetitive message is according to your will, not my will. Let the Holy Spirit be here. Help me to speak and deliver this the way it should be, in Jesus' name, amen. I don't know how this happened to be, but I'm a country song lover and I've heard it several times before Carrie Underwood was singing Jesus, Take the Wheel.

Speaker 4:

A little story about her driving home in the wintertime and hit a patch of ice and the song says the baby's in the back and she spun out. And all through this trouble she cries out Jesus, take the wheel, I can't do this on my own. She was so worried about her and her baby. And then the car comes to a stop and everything was okay. She looked back the baby was sleeping, Didn't even know there was a traumatic experience, but she had said Jesus, please take the wheel. And it reminded me of when I came to the Lord. It was similar to that. My life was out of control, Life was. I couldn't do anything on my own and I cried out. I said Jesus, please come and help, take the wheel.

Speaker 2:

And I meant it.

Speaker 4:

I did. I was serious, I wasn't faking it or like that. I really needed him to come and help me and I willfully just said I'm going to turn it all over to you. It's all yours, I'm giving you my life. Jesus, come and help me. And he heard my cry and it was wonderful and it was amazing the moment that he heard that cry. He really did hear it. But it's also amazing to me how fast, when the danger and the hard times changed, how fast I took the wheel back over.

Speaker 4:

Now, I didn't throw Jesus out of the car, but I did slide him over into the passenger seat. Amen, I mean, why not have a co-pilot like Jesus, just in case? I mean, you know that things are going to get a little icy again. There's going to be financial slippery spots and health slippery spots, and in my life there was a lot of legal slippery spots. But I needed him there and it was smart to have them on my side. But I have to ask myself when I ask you too is this why the Son of God gave his life on the cross so that he could just come down and continue to be your servant while you go through these times in life. Now he did say when he was here that he came to serve, but once that was done and he gave his life, that should have been enough. But I kind of wanted to just keep him in my car.

Speaker 4:

But the Bible tells us that to call upon the name of the Lord is a call for us to surrender. To throw your hands up and say I can't do it anymore. I can't do it anymore is a call for us to surrender. To throw your hands up and say I can't do it anymore. I can't do it anymore. I got to turn my life over to you, but not just for now, not just through the scary moments. We're supposed to do it from now on, forever, everything, all the time, in every circumstance. Amen, paul said in Philippians. He says for me to live is Christ and to die is gain. What Ted says for me to live is gain and when I die I hope it's in Christ. I mean, we get so focused on it, but I have to be honest with myself. I have taken the wheel back over.

Speaker 4:

I believe that as we go through this journey with Jesus, it's always good to revisit that contract, that covenant that he made with us when he came to the earth. He tells his disciples in Matthew 26, 17, 30, this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for the many, for the forgiveness of sins, and through this shed blood, as we draw close to him, we receive that forgiveness, but also the grace and the mercy of God. But he also said that you must follow me. Though I don't want to sit in your passenger seat, I need you to follow me. You can't drive this car.

Speaker 4:

He went to the rich, young ruler and the young, rich ruler said this what must I do to inherit the kingdom of God? He said go, sell all you want, give it to the poor and follow me. That's terrible, because he said he couldn't do it. But he was honest. He said I'm not able to give it all up. He didn't say okay and then stuck half the money in his pocket and said I'll follow you. No, he was honest, he walked away. Now, that's sad that he walked away. We haven't walked away. But have we sold everything we have and gave it to the poor to follow Jesus, or are we deceiving ourselves? I'm such a manipulator Sometimes I don't know who it is you're looking at up here.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, I'm trying to be the godly man, you know. But then there's times that I look at myself when I said you faked it all. This time you got to give up everything and I definitely have not done that yet. But I'm praying that God will help me to do that and give it all to Jesus. You may say I think I gave all mine up, but to be safe, how would I check? Well, I'll tell you how you check it. Show me the power. Show me your power. If you've given it all up to Jesus and you've been filled with His Holy Spirit, show me the power. Then Turn in your Bibles, if you would, to 2 Timothy 3.

Speaker 4:

I'm going to repeat something that Bob brought up before. So everybody wrote this message, but me. Well, maybe the Holy Spirit. 2 Timothy 3, please, I'm going to read from 1 through 5. My Bible says this Mark this there will be terrible times in the last days.

Speaker 4:

My Bible says this Not lovers of good, treacherous, rash conceited lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God and mostly having a form of godliness but denying its power, have nothing to do with such people. You should get up and walk out now, because I am one of these such people Denying the power, power. I don't deny the existence of the power, but most times I deny that I want any of it. You got to show me the power, not show me the money, not show me the mega church that you've started, not show me your mission trips all over India and around the world. No, you've got to show me the power. Good works is not the evidence of power. I respect the work that you do at feeding the homeless and praying for the sick. I respect all the works that the Spirit leads you to do, but the evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit is power, not works. Works is not the subject here. I know we all have to do some things, but works is not what's at hand right now.

Speaker 4:

I got to tell you the truth, the message that came to me this week and even though everybody else got some of it too, it came to me through a conviction. You see, I gave my life to the Lord in 1986 and went right into ministry, day and night, working in the mission, working with the homeless, the drug addicts, the lost. Day and night I'd get called. You got a homeless guy who needs a place to stay. You got this family who needs some help and at times, you know, it got really, really hard and through it all I had the privilege of seeing the true presence of the Holy Spirit, felt the Holy Ghost all the time. I felt like when I walked into my office he was already there. I could feel that like the shekinah glory. But through all this, I can count on my hand the times that I laid my hands on the sick and tried to heal them. I can count on this hand how many times I tried to cast out demons.

Speaker 4:

Six and a half, seven years working in the ministry, where was my power? I mean, I was totally thought I had totally gave everything up to the Lord, but there was no power. The spirit and the power was there. I just didn't possess it all. I'm not saying I didn't give my life to the Lord. I'm not saying I didn't want to do things. But you can believe this. Satan is going to let somebody as new as I was to the ministry to walk around throwing around some Holy Spirit power without offensive, counteroffensive. And he did this.

Speaker 4:

I had attacks through my dreams at night, daytime, I had hostile people coming after me and all through these battles, you know, eventually I got wore down. You're like you're all weary. And while I was doing that I got wore down and I said why am I doing this? This is hurting me. I'm getting attacks from the devil all the time. I said I don't know why I'm doing it. I'm not even getting paid. I got a small stipend for my basic needs, can't get a car, can't get insurance. The only difference between a homeless guy and me is I was in charge, he's homeless, I was homeless, I'm staying in this mission. I couldn't understand. So I left, I walked away and boy, what a trip that was. Talk about going into a faraway land again. The minute I walked away I was back in the enemy's field, you know. And he loved this. That had to end too. So what did I do? This glorious resolution to my problem.

Speaker 4:

I come out and I joined a little church, a little loving. Join the little church, a little loving, peaceful, comfortable church, safe and sound. Isn't it safe here? It's a nice, safe and sound church. Such a loving church. I mean, who really wants to put themselves in that line of fire for the enemy? Because if you think he's not coming, if it's all just been nice and easy, if it's been peaceful, you probably haven't ruffled his feathers enough.

Speaker 4:

Paul told Timothy what we just read that people will have the form of godliness but deny the power of it or deny the use of it. Do we do that sometimes? I mean, I come into this little church. You know what? I'll continue to lift people up, or even just their names, if you bring them. I'll continue to lift people up, or even just their names, if you bring them. I'll lift them up to God and tell him handle it. You're the healer. I'll just lift them up to you. I don't have to have the power if all I'm going to do is lift them up to Jesus. Is that what he told us to do? Is that why he shed his precious blood? Am I really a disciple?

Speaker 4:

You talked about discipleship all Wednesday. Jamie talks about it. You read from Matthew 13. By this, everyone will know you are my disciples if you love one another. I haven't had a loving family in my life and I haven't loved a lot of people, but the ones that I've loved. It took a while, but I got to know them, daniel. I knew their first name, their last name, where they lived at and what they do. Do I stand before you today and tell you that I love you. Donna. Something, barry something.

Speaker 1:

I don't even know your names and I'm telling you that I love you.

Speaker 4:

I'm a liar. That's not true. That's not good. We throw that word out like I love you. I love you because we want to appear to be like disciples, but when you leave, you could be a serial killer. When you leave here, I don't know what you do when you're not here and you don't know what I do when I'm not here. I believe that I'm a little bit fraudulent. I don't always walk to walk and talk to talk. You know I don't always do that. I slip up, I get on those icy patches, and that's why I do need Jesus to take the wheel, but I haven't turned them all over to him yet.

Speaker 4:

Maybe this is just a day of reckoning, maybe everything you spoke about was to convict me, and maybe you finished it off by putting the final shot on me this morning, jamie. I don't know, but there's a reason for it all the modern day church has really hit an icy patch. They've gone way off the deep end. We're talking about the Great Commission. In my life I've said I'm not doing it. It's too dangerous. It takes me out of my comfort zone. Sometimes I'm more fearful of the devil than I am God, and I thought the fear of the Lord was the beginning of the wisdom. No, that's love. No, you need to be afraid of what's coming. If you want to be, you know, stand before him in a proper way. There's nothing wrong with having being cautious of the enemy Don't, don't cut him short. Don't cut him short. He's tough, the enemy's tough. I've been there, I've seen them work. But then there's that song that we used to sing and I can't get out of my head. You might know it trust and obey, for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey. And I'm not really that happy today. I'm not happy with me Now. I've heard people talking this morning and outside you beat yourself up when you can't live up to the expectations that you think that God wants for you. It could be simpler than that. Maybe it's not that hard, maybe he doesn't want that much from you, but we read scriptures and there's so many of them. We feel like we. I don't know what we think we've got to be. We've got to be David, we've got to be Gideon, we've got to be Hercules. What have we got to be? You know? I think what we need to be is willing to humble ourselves and surrender to the Lord. The coming of the Lord, the return of the Lord is near. We've the Lord. The return of the Lord is near.

Speaker 4:

I'm going to do an absolute and say we all, even though some of you are more advanced than others, but we've all been students of the gospel for many years. I was a student of the gospel for 38 years, and that's okay, because the disciples were told don't do anything until I give you the power. They stayed in the upper room, but then there come a time when they had to leave that upper room, go out into the world, appear to be drunk, speaking in tongues, healing people in the name of Jesus. But they were filled with the power from on high. People thought they were nuts. People think they were nuts, but wouldn't you like to imagine he'd come back today and you're at sheets laying hands on a sick person, or you're praying for the lost, or you want to be doing those things that he said you were going to be doing? You won't have to ask him haven't I done all these things in your name? And he won't have to answer and say depart from me, you workers of iniquity. I'm not here to say, or I don't think the Spirit's here to say that you're not doing enough. The question is do you have the power? I don't have to yell it out, power is such a powerful word you don't have to yell it. Do you have the power? You know? Have you really surrendered all your life to Jesus so he can fill you with his power, so you can do his ministry?

Speaker 4:

The enemy knows the time is short. You can bet he's planning a great offensive. The Bible says so. I don't want to be found just hiding in some church in my comfort zone, peaceful with you, loving people, who won't even tell me that my message wasn't very good today. You won't even be honest. You'll say oh no, you did a great job, I got it all. When I go home and cut that piece of ham, I'll still remember what you said this morning, but you probably won't. But I don't want to fake this anymore. We're in a season of war. Yet Look around the world Outside of the church. The world is in a season of war. It's all over and the media is telling us that the election is coming.

Speaker 4:

But if you'll choose this one or if you'll choose that one, you'll have your food that you need. Prices will come down. Gas prices will come down. You can have an electric car. You don't have an electric car. They got you distracted with all this.

Speaker 4:

Remember when the people were following Jesus? Did they want a savior or did they want food and clothing, affordable prices? Did they want an electric car? Maybe from the electric boat? They were there just to get earthly things. The media is having you chafe after these. I'm going to vote according to the earthly things. The media is having you chafe after these. I'm going to vote according to the earthly things.

Speaker 4:

What I'm worried about is the commander-in-chief. There's wars everywhere. I need somebody that can either get us out of one or get us into one and win it. I don't care about no food today. I'm going to be all right. Jesus said you'll have your food and clothing. I'm worried about what's going on. It's the same way with spirituality. The war's coming. I'm telling you right now. The war's coming.

Speaker 4:

Pastor Bob has been commissioned to teach us the word of God, so we'd be ready, but he is not your commander in chief. Jesus is. Bob can equip us with a word, but the word will equip us with power, the Holy Spirit. I ain't putting you down, bob? No, I know you are and you know you're calling and you do it well, but Jesus is the only one.

Speaker 4:

So I ask you again today who's driving the car in this relationship? I know in my life sometimes he's in the driver's seat, mostly when I'm going through hard times, and then other times I like to take it back over. Nothing wrong with going for a spin, you know, but I wreck quite often. So I got to ask myself am I really surrendering everything? I know this, I know this. I admit this today in front of God, in front of you. I can't do this on my own anymore. I mean, some of my ups and downs now aren't as bad as they were back in the days. I'm not heading back to prison. The police aren't looking for me. I'm not heading back to prison. The police aren't looking for me. I'm not doing any drugs and I'll call now.

Speaker 4:

But my life isn't what it's supposed to be and I think many of us can admit to that. My life's not what it's supposed to be and the only thing, in a way, is me. It's just some about the flesh that you know. I want to be happy, but their only happiness can be in Jesus. If you, if you've ever come to the Lord and say you're going to give your life to him and you ain't living right, your life is miserable.

Speaker 4:

Today we fool ourselves in saying, oh, everything is good, but if everything ain't God, then everything ain't good, amen. So this morning I'm telling the Lord again Jesus, please take the wheel as of today. Let my life start all over today. Jesus, please take the wheel as of today. Let my life start all over today. Jesus, please take the wheel. I don't want it back. Remove it from the car, drive it through the spirit. I don't want the wheel back, but I keep taking it back.

Speaker 4:

I've got a wonderful friend, wonderful family, wonderful boss, wonderful pastor and wonderful church to attend. But I can't just ease up in here and feel good if I'm not living for God. I'd be safer if sometimes we never left here and Kyle, you just brought dinner and lunch over every day. Because when I go out there I'm so easily entangled. Paul says that Don't be easily entangled. Paul says that Don't be easily entangled in the things of the world. But everywhere I go they're putting new stuff like lottery tickets over here, alcohol right by the door, like you've got to walk around the alcohol to get into the store, then my favorite cigarette rack. Yeah, I smoke. I'm trying to overcome that too. It's just everywhere, and it's a spiritual war If you think it's just life as the normal life. No, this is a war against your soul and I want mine to go to heaven, to be with the Lord. Lord, what must I do to inherit the kingdom of God? Give up everything that you hold dear and follow me. Amen, pastor, it's all yours. Thank you, thank you.

Let me just say this before we start singing you know the world is always saying start singing. You know the world is always saying look, here is love. You'll find it in people and relationships. You'll find it in emotional attachments to money and things and achievements. But God says look, here is love. You'll find it in the cross, where the prince of life, your ransom, shed for you his precious blood. Here is love. Pastor.

Speaker 5:

Here is love, vast as the ocean, loving kindness as the love. When the prince Of life, all ransomed, shed for us His precious blood. Who His love Will not remember? Who can cease His love will not remember? Who can cease to sing His praise? He can never be forgotten throughout heaven's eternal days. On the mount of crucifixion, fountains open, deep and wide, through the flood, gates of God's mercy float a vast and gracious tide, like mighty rivers poured in sex and from above, oh, heaven's peace and perfect justice, kissed a guilty world in love. Here is love, vast as the ocean, loving kindness as the flood, when the prince Of life are ransomed flood. When the prince of life, our ransom, shed for us his precious blood. Who his love will not remember? Who can cease to sing his praise? He can never be forgotten throughout heaven's eternal days, eternal days.

Speaker 5:

On the mount of crucifixion Fountains open deep and wide. Through the floodgates of God's mercy Float a vast and gracious tide. Grace and love like mighty rivers Bored in sex. And from above, heaven's peace and perfect justice Kissed a guilty world in love who His love will not remember and who can cease to sing His praise. Oh, he can never be forgotten Throughout heaven's eternal days. Grace and love, like mighty rivers poured incessant from above. Oh, heaven's peace and perfect justice Kissed a guilty world in love. Heaven's peace and perfect justice Kissed a guilty world in love.

Yes, lord, cast me not away from your presence. O Lord, take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Speaker 1:

Spirit from me restore unto me the joy of your salvation.

Speaker 5:

Renew a right spirit within me. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, O Lord. Take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation and renew my spirit within me.

Speaker 1:

Cast me not away from your presence.

Speaker 5:

O Lord, take not your Holy Spirit from me. Take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation and renew my spirit within me. We will remember, we will remember, we will remember, we will remember the works of your hands and we will stop and give you praise, for great is your faithfulness. I believe in all the praise we will remember. We will remember, we will remember the works of your hands and we will stop and give you praise, for great is your faithfulness.

Speaker 1:

We love you, lord yes, oh how he loves you and me, oh how he loves, oh how he loves you and me.

Speaker 5:

Oh how he loves, oh how he loves you and me. He gave his life. What more could he give? Oh how he loves you, oh how he loves me. Oh how he loves you and me.

Speaker 2:

Let's sing it again, thank you.

Speaker 5:

Oh, how he loves you and me. That's the truth. Oh, how he loves you and me. That's the truth. Oh, how he loves me. Oh how he loves you and me. He died for you. He loves you so much. Oh how he loves. Oh how he loves you and me. Oh how he loves you and me. Oh how he loves you and me. And he gave his life. What more could he give? Oh how he loves you. Oh how he loves me. Oh how he loves you and me. He's a personal friend. He's a personal Savior. We can't fathom His love. We don't even know what love means. But we know, like any good parent, when you cry, he cries. When you hurt, he hurts. That's how much he loves you, thank you.

Speaker 5:

When I cry, you cry. When I hurt, you hurt. When I have lost someone. It takes a piece of you too. When I fall on my face, you fill me with grace, cause nothing breaks your heart or tears you apart, like when I cry. When I cry, you cry. When I hurt, you hurt. When I have lost someone, it takes a piece of you too. When I fall on my face, you fill me with grace, cause nothing breaks your heart or tears you apart, like when I cry. You're the one who calmed the raging sea.

Speaker 1:

You're the one who made the blind to see. You look through heaven and eternity, and through it all.

Speaker 5:

You saw me. When I cry, you cry. When I hurt, you hurt. When I have lost someone, it takes a piece of you too. When I fall on my face, you fill me with grace, cause nothing breaks your heart or tears you apart, like when I cry. It's a personal friendship. It's a personal friendship. It's a personal relationship. When I cry, you cry. When I hurt, you hurt. And when I have lost someone, it takes a piece of you too. It takes a piece of you too. When I fall on my face, you fill me with grace. Nothing breaks your heart or tears you apart, like when I cry.

Speaker 5:

Oh how he loves you and me. Oh how he loves you and me. He gave his life. What more could he give? Oh how he loves you. Oh how he loves me. Oh how he loves you and me. Let's sing that chorus. Let's sing it together. Sing it with everything inside of you. Yes, it's Jesus. Oh how he loves you and me. Oh how he loves you and me. He gave his life. What more could he give? Oh how he loves you. Oh how he loves me. Oh how he loves you and me.

Speaker 1:

You're the one who calmed the raging sea. You're the one who made the blind see.

Speaker 5:

You looked through heaven and eternity and through it all, you saw me. When I cry, you cry. When I hurt, you hurt, and when I have lost someone, it takes a piece of you too. When I fall on my face, you fill me with grace. Nothing breaks your heart or tears you apart, like when I cry. Think about that for a moment. The one who calmed the raging sea, the one who bruised the serpent's head, the prince of peace, the sweet rose of Sharon, he's your best friend. He's your heavenly father. When I cry, you cry. When I hurt, you hurt. When I have lost someone, it takes a piece of you too. When I fall on my face, you fill me with grace. Nothing breaks your heart or tears you apart, like when I cry. Thank you, lord, hallelujah, hallelujah. Thank you, jesus. Hallelujah to the Lamb, holy Spirit. We thank you for your presence here this morning. We don't take this lightly, lord.

Speaker 1:

Speaker 5:

When I cry, you cry. When I hurt, you hurt. When I have lost someone, it takes a piece of you too. When I fall on my face, you fill me with grace. Nothing breaks your heart or tears you apart Like when I cry. Nothing breaks your heart or tears you apart Like when I cried.
